ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR COLLECTIONS AND SCHOLARLY
COMMUNICATION

 

Position:  Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly
Communication

Primary Location:  The Gelman Library System, The Gelman Library
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: The George Washington University's Gelman Library
System is seeking nominations and applications for an Associate
University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communication
(AUL/C&SC).  The person in this recently redefined, senior-level
administrative position will have the opportunity to lead a dynamic,
multifaceted collections program and to take a lead role in developing
policies and implementing changes not only in collection development but
in the entire organization.  
 
The AUL/C&SC reports to the University Librarian and works closely with
three other Associate University Librarians as part of the
administrative team that provides leadership for the library system.
The AUL/C&SC is responsible for managing and planning the development of
all collections, including both current and special collections; digital
publishing; and the University-wide scholarly communication program.
The AUL/C&SC is also responsible for certain aspects of the physical
management of the collections, including inventory control, storage,
preservation, stacks management and related catalog maintenance.
 
The AUL/C&SC directly supervises five functions: Collection Development;
Digital Publishing and Scholarly Communication; Gifts; Special
Collections; and Physical Collections. The AUL/C&SC is responsible for
developing and managing all aspects of the library system's annual
collections budget of over $5 million, including: guiding collection
development librarians on strategies and policies; developing annual
budget requests; projecting long-term needs; preparing and submitting
reports on expenditures; monitoring endowment incomes and expenditures;
and actively contributing to fundraising efforts, donor relations and
stewardship of gifts that support collections, in partnership with the
Director of Library Advancement.
 
As a member of the senior administrative team, the AUL/C&SC contributes
to planning, policy development, resource management and decision-making
for the Gelman Library System, which is comprised of the main library
and the libraries of the Mount Vernon and Virginia campuses.
 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA-accredited MLS in library or information
science.  Minimum seven years of experience as a professional librarian
or archivist in increasingly responsible positions in collection
development, special collections or acquisitions, or in some combination
of these three areas totaling at least seven years.  At least five years
of experience in a managerial or supervisory role in academic libraries.
 
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED: Second graduate
degree in a subject discipline.  Substantive experience in budget
preparation, projection and analysis.  Knowledge of and experience with
current digital collection management practices and access issues.  Deep
knowledge of research library collections as demonstrated by experience
working with such collections.  A sophisticated understanding of
scholarly communication issues and trends in publishing and information
technology.  Substantial record of effective engagement with faculty in
the development of collections.  Ability to communicate effectively
orally and in writing.  Creativity and excellent organizational skills.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
 
APPOINTMENT RANK & SALARY: Salary and appointment at the rank of
Librarian III/IV dependent upon qualifications.  Salary range minimum:
$74,000 - $85,000 per year, plus an adjustment based on number of years
of experience.  This position includes an administrative stipend.
Comprehensive benefits package includes 22 days/year paid annual leave
plus 12 days per year paid sick leave; medical; TIAA/CREF; tuition
assistance.
