CATALOGING LIBRARIAN POSITION DESCRIPTION


PURPOSE:   Under the direction of the Technical Services Team Leader in 
the Communications & External Relations (CER) Directorate, the incumbent 
will work with the other cataloging staff to establish and maintain 
cataloging policies and procedures that meet the needs of the Oak Ridge 
National Laboratory (ORNL) library and ensure these policies and 
procedures conform to national and international library standards. 

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

•	Responsible for cataloging print and electronic resources.  
Develops and implements creative approaches to bibliographic services to 
enhance search and discovery of those resources 
•	Establishes and maintains cataloging policies and procedures that 
meet the needs of the ORNL library and ensures conformance to national and 
international library standards 
•	Ensures the ALEPH cataloging module supports the cataloging 
function 
•	Responsible for the original cataloging and copy cataloging of 
monographs, serials, and audiovisual materials; collections of e-books, e-
journals, and e-reports.
•	Original cataloging of a collection of unclassified technical 
reports that are unique to ORNL.
•	Interprets and applies cataloging rules.
•	Assigns subject analytics and makes serial title changes as 
required.
•	Implements authority control in the catalog.
•	Supports ALEPH’s cataloging module, including the On-line Computer 
Library Center (OCLC)/ALEPH interactions.
•	Responsible for database maintenance, quality control and cleanup 
required to apply Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) standards to existing 
catalog records.
•	Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality 
program requirements.
•	Maintains strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation 
of values and ethics

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  Master’s Degree in Library or Information 
Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program and 
a minimum of two years of post-Master’s experience in an academic, public 
or research library – primarily engaged in cataloging and bibliographic 
control activities. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Anglo-
American Cataloging Rules 2 (AACR2), MARC, Library of Congress Subject 
Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRI), and 
Library of Congress Classification System (LCCS).  Demonstrated project 
management, analytical, and problem solving skills, with an aptitude for 
complex and detailed work. Current awareness of national trends and 
developments in cataloging, metadata standards, and information retrieval 
is required. Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written 
communication skills are mandatory. Must be able to set priorities, multi-
task, be self directed and motivated and adapt to ever changing needs. 
Must have the ability to work with a team of service-oriented 
professionals.  Working knowledge of PC Microsoft Office (which includes 
Word, PowerPoint, Excel) required.  Proven ability to function well in a 
fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:   Knowledge and experience working with OCLC, 
ALEPH or other integrated library systems preferred.   Knowledge and 
experience with cataloging or managing electronic resources (e.g., e-
journals, e-books, or other e-resources) preferred.

WORK DIRECTION AND INTERFACES:  Position reports to the Technical Services 
Team Leader.  Interfaces with a team of service oriented professionals at 
ORNL.
