                              Head of Reference and Instruction
                                        The Nimitz Library
                                      U.S. Naval Academy
                                           Annapolis, MD 

The Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy, is seeking a librarian
with energy, experience, initiative, flexibility, enthusiasm, good
judgment and a strong service orientation to provide leadership for its
Reference and Instruction Department.   This is a key position as we
continue to develop and administer patron-centered Library services to
support and stimulate student and faculty research.   
Primary Responsibilities:
1.Provides leadership for planning, staffing, assessment, and general
administration of reference and instructional services.  In the process,
continues to oversee a collaborative environment that establishes policies
and procedures; manages projects; and converts problems into issues that
are addressed effectively.
2. Exercises a full range of supervisory responsibilities over a staff of
ten professional librarians and a support staff member.
3.Works closely with the Head of Collection Development, who directs the
collection development responsibilities of the reference-bibliographers.  
4.Participates in reference, instruction, and collection development
activities.
5.Serves as a reference-bibliographer for an assigned academic department.
6.Oversees the maintenance of the reference collection.  

The Naval Academy is the Navy's undergraduate college, with some 4,500
students, approximately 570 civilian and military faculty, and 20 major
fields of study in three academic divisions (seven in Engineering, seven
in Math & Science, and six in Humanities/Social Sciences).  The
Academy has produced eight Rhodes Scholars in the past three years alone. 
The Nimitz Library has a user-oriented staff of 40 FTE positions
(including 20 professional librarians) and some 587,000 volumes of books
and bound periodicals, plus government documents, microforms, extensive
holdings in Special Collections and Archives, and a growing array of
electronic resources.  For additional information about the Library, see

Located in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland and "the sailing
capital of America", the Naval Academy is 30 miles from both
Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay Area.
Salary is $66,767 (first step of GS-12 pay grade) or higher, depending
upon experience and other qualifications.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. In-depth knowledge of academic library theories and practices,
standards of reference, collection development, and library instruction in
order to provide leadership for the work of the individuals providing these
services.  
2. Current knowledge of developments in the academic library and higher
education fields including scholarly communication, information literacy,
and information technologies, in order to contribute to planning and
decision-making regarding the Library's functions and services.
3.  Experience in managing projects and guiding staff in their completion.

4.  Knowledge and experience working as a reference-bibliographer
providing reference, library instruction, collection development, and
liaison work with faculty.  
5. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to all levels. 
This includes the ability to communicate effectively with individuals and
groups (e.g., to conduct meetings and give instruction presentations).

-An ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science degree

-Ability to provide flexible strategic directions in a dynamic work
environment
-Knowledge of appropriate technologies in support of both traditional and
innovative library services
