Summary: Assists in all aspects of the management of the Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging (MARC) Department, a large technical services unit responsible for the order, receipt, and copy cataloging of monographic publications. Specific responsibilities of the assistant head include direct supervision of 9 non-exempt staff engaged in a wide range of monographic acquisitions and copy cataloging work. The assistant head monitors and manages day-to-day workflows and assignments in the department; answers questions and solves problems related to both acquisitions and cataloging; creates and maintains policy and procedural documentation. The assistant head works closely with the head and one non-exempt staff supervisor within the department and also with managers in other technical services departments to coordinate policies, procedures, and work flows. Required Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience; sufficient cataloging experience to support training, policy and procedural formulation, and problem-solving for copy cataloging work; demonstrated supervisory potential; excellent time management and collaboration skills; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work with a variety of staff; interest in and understanding of production processes; interest in and willingness to learn acquisitions duties and issues; familiarity with at least one West European language. Preferred: successful supervisory experience; acquisitions work experience; experience using the Dewey Decimal Classification system for call number assignment; experience using OCLC and an integrated library management system; demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed procedural documentation.
