TITLE: Technology Outreach Coordinator, National Network of
Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR)
LOCATION: Health Sciences Libraries
THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the
University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than six million
cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial
titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty
recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most
important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the
highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating
seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment. The Libraries was
commended in the University’s 2003 accreditation review for its rich collection,
well-qualified staff, and “exceptional service to students, staff development,
and a commitment to planning and assessment of service.”
THE POSITION:
The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an
innovative librarian with excellent communication skills to join the Regional
Medical Library (RML) team for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine,
Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR). The mission of the NN/LM PNR is to
promote access to health information—and the effective use of this
information—in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. This
individual will coordinate activities to increase effective use of current and
emerging technologies affecting collection and delivery of information by a
regional network of libraries, agencies, and organizations that provide quality
health information to clients. Duties will also include training in use of
computer systems that connect people to the health information they need, and
provision of technical support for system users as well as working with the
staff of seven other Regional Medical Libraries (major institutions under
contract with the National Library of Medicine) and staff in the National
Network Office (NNO) headquartered at the National Library of Medicine.
NN/LM PNR is funded by a contract from the National Library of Medicine.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Under the general direction of the Associate Director:
1. Plan and oversee activities that assist network members in the Pacific
Northwest Region to understand the emerging technological changes
affecting information access
2. Develop and maintain working knowledge of
e-tools and emerging technologies (e.g. blogs, wikis, media-casting, RSS, and
other digital capabilities) in order to provide consultation and support for
libraries and other network members in the region
3. Provide training to
network members (both in-person and from a distance ) to increase awareness and
skill in current technologies and e-tools
4. Conduct training for specific
audiences/subjects to aid in developing knowledge and skills in the effective
and appropriate use of health information
5. Work with other RML staff to promote the use of electronic health
information resources through demonstrations, instructional sessions, and
exhibits of relevant electronic resources, particularly NLM products and
services
6. Share with RML colleagues strategies, techniques, and best practices for
using emerging technologies to support teaching and learning
7. Develop
programs to provide information and education opportunities on technology and
policy related to scholarly communication and open access
8. Post announcements, publish blog articles, and maintain assigned
webpages related to emerging technologies and e-tools
9. Develop and promote NN/LM PNR funding opportunities related to
technology
10. Evaluate technology components of funding proposals
11. Serve as a liaison to the NNO about technology-related issues affecting
information delivery and library service of Network organizations
12. Work with other RML staff to carry out the planning, coordination,
instruction, research, and writing functions of the NN/LM PNR
13. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as
required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
* Two years
professional experience in an academic or health sciences library environment or
the equivalent.
* Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal
computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology
applications.
* Experience with a variety of Web-deliverable instructional
module authoring tools, such as (but not limited to) Camtasia Studio,
Flash, Moodle, and Java authoring tools.
* Experience with a variety of Web
applications, such as (but not limited to) Dreamweaver (site-editing
package) and WordPress (blog software).
* Familiarity with the concepts,
goals, and methods of health information literacy.
* Strong teaching skills
and demonstrated experience creating effective instructional and informational
materials.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated
ability to explain technology in plain English.
* Demonstrated ability
to work in a collaborative and collegial team environment.
* Excellent
organizational, time, and project management skills.
* Ability to thrive in
an environment characterized by ambiguity, change, and occasionally competing
agendas.
* Valid driver’s license and travel required.
Preferred:
* Coursework in medical librarianship; familiarity with NLM and NN/LM
products and services
* Experience in collection development and issues of
scholarly communication, and open access.
* Experience in the design and
delivery of health information literacy and instructional classes.
*
Experience with online courseware and other relevant learning and information
technologies.
* Ability to create and maintain web-deliverable interactive,
self-paced lessons, tutorials, and modules that extend effective library
education.
* Experience using scripting languages (especially PHP) and
implementing W3C web usability standards.
* Experience working in and leading
team-based initiatives, preferably with both library and non-library staff.

Experience in facilitating effective communication between library and
Information Technology staff in a health sciences environment.
SALARY: $43,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or
Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate
of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per
year. No state or local income tax.
