Five Colleges, Incorporated, a consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount
Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst,
invites applications for the  ¾ time position (grant-funded through January
31, 2009) of Archivists' Toolkit Archives Analyst/Metadata Specialist.  

The archives analyst will contribute expertise to the ongoing development of
the Archivists' Toolkit (www.archiviststoolkit.org), an open source software
development project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  The
Archivists' Toolkit (AT) is the first open source archival data management
system to provide integrated support for accessioning, description, donor
tracking, name and subject authority work, and location management for
archival materials.  The project is a collaboration among the Five Colleges,
Inc., New York University Libraries, and the UCSD Libraries, with project
staff located at each of the institutional sites.  The Five Colleges
archives analyst, operating from UMass Amherst Libraries, will participate
in establishing functional requirements, composing use case scenarios,
drafting software specifications, and testing the application at various
times.

Minimum qualifications:  Masters Degree in library science from an American
Library Association-accredited library and information studies program (must
be earned by time of hire); familiarity with basic archival processes; e.g.,
accessioning, description; good knowledge of and experience with archival
metadata standards; demonstrated high level of written and oral
communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly in
presentations; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to
interact effectively and work independently, collegially, and productively
with a variety of individuals and groups in a fast-paced project
