The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library seeks a knowledgeable, motivated, and collaborative individual for the position of Special Project Cataloger in the North Carolina Collection.  The Special Project Cataloger will perform retrospective cataloging of monographic pamphlets, serials, and other special format materials using standard cataloging tools: AACR2 revised, LC subject headings, MARC21 formats, and OCLC.  The North Carolina Collection also applies local subject headings and a modified Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.  The Special Project Cataloger will perform original as well as adaptive cataloging, and the position requires online catalog maintenance and authority control.  Cataloging is performed to national standards, with participation in the NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, and SACO programs.  The Special Project Cataloger will report to the North Carolina Collection¢s Supervising Cataloger.
 
The North Carolina Collection is located in the Wilson Library on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, and is the largest and most comprehensive collection of library materials related to a single state.  Its holdings include more than 300,000 books, pamphlets, government documents, newspapers, periodicals, printed maps, and audiovisual materials.  It also holds more than 800,000 photographic images and 15,000 artifacts.  The Collection is widely known for its distinguished Thomas Wolfe and Sir Walter Raleigh collections.  The Collection is used by University undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, as well as students and scholars from other institutions, independent scholars, professional writers, and the general public.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required:  An ALA accredited Master¢s in Library Science; experience cataloging using the Anglo-American rules; excellent attention to detail combined with high productivity; experience editing online cataloging records; ability to work harmoniously in a small group setting; evidence of flexibility and of analytical skills needed to resolve complex problems.
 
Preferred: General knowledge of North Carolina history, geography, and culture; experience in cataloging in multiple formats; experience in working on retrospective conversion projects; NACO experience; familiarity with Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
 
This is a twelve-month fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of a one year renewal.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
