The Georgetown University Library seeks a dynamic, forward thinking Science Reference Librarian to join us as we participate in the University’s planning process for a New Science Center and as we prepare services and collections for a significantly expanded science faculty. The Blommer Science Library, a department of Lauinger Library with a staff of 4.5 FTE plus student employees, is housed in the Reiss Science Building and serves the students and faculty in biology, chemistry,  computer science, mathematics, and physics.


The Science Reference Librarian interprets and analyzes information needs of students, faculty and other users of the Blommer Science Library; recommends and directs users to appropriate sources of information; maintains the Blommer Science Library web pages; teaches library research sessions in a wide range of related subject areas and develops instructional materials as required. This position serves as the Library Liaison for collection development to two of the five academic departments in the Sciences and is responsible for selecting materials in all formats, assessing the relevant collection areas, and monitoring the collection budgets for these disciplines. The Science Reference Librarian will have the opportunity to work closely with other library and university departments to plan, implement, develop and maintain a program for digital archiving of University datasets and intellectual assets.

Minimum Requirements: Masters in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. Working knowledge of the structure of information and scholarly communication in the scientific disciplines. Ability to develop working partnerships with faculty and academic departments. Experience instructing researchers and students in the use of information resources. Undergraduate coursework in the sciences, preferably in chemistry.

Preferred:  Bachelor of Science or advanced degree in chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, or computer science. Experience with chemical databases and structure searching. Reference and instruction experience in an academic or special science library. Experience with or interest in working with datasets. Demonstrated awareness of trends in the application of information technologies to library services. Knowledge of digital library standards and technologies and their application in digital archiving. Record of participation and/or contribution in library professional organizations. Evidence of superior oral and written communication skills. Must have strong commitment to service, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment, with all levels of patrons and staff.

Salary commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits package including 21 days/year paid leave, medical; TIAA/CREF; tuition assistance. This is a 12-month, Academic/ Administrative Professional (AAP) appointment.
