AFRICANA LIBRARIAN
CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLECTIONS, OHIO UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES


Ohio University Libraries seeks applications and nominations for the
position of Africana Librarian. The successful applicant will provide
leadership in providing reference services, instruction, collection
development and outreach activities.  The Africana Librarian will work
closely with the faculty and students in the African Studies Program and
outside researchers with an interest in the continent.  We seek applicants
with a commitment to working effectively with students, faculty and staff
from diverse backgrounds.

Position Description:

The Africana Librarian will provide reference assistance, instruction and
develop the collections related to Africa, in support of the African
Studies Program. The Africana Librarian will also provide general reference
services for the other collections in the Center for International
Collections.  The librarian will be responsible for presenting class
lectures, workshops and developing useful electronic content to assist in
the use of the Libraries' resources. The Africana Librarian will be
responsible for the development of the collections and library services
related to African Studies.  The Africana Librarian will collaborate with
faculty and participate in university activities and initiatives.  The
successful candidate will be expected to serve on committees and other
library-wide groups.  Active participation in conferences and cooperative
ventures within the national community of African Studies Librarians is
expected.

Required Qualifications:
    * Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited
program or a graduate degree similar in content to those accredited by
ALA.  In lieu of the MLS degree, a Master's of African Studies or related
degree with experience in a library setting can be substituted.
    * Reading knowledge of an African language is required to fulfill the
bibliographic duties of the position.
    * Some library or Africa-related work or field experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
    * A graduate degree related to African Studies.
    * Knowledge of information resources (print and electronic) relevant to
Africa.
    * Knowledge of collection development in research libraries, principles
of scholarly communication and the African book trade.
    * Experience living or working in Africa
    * A working knowledge of another European language in addition to English.
    * Experience in an academic library or research setting.
    * Proficiency in written and oral communication skills as demonstrated
by application materials and previous work.
    * Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse clientele.
    * Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to public service.

Salary and Benefits

Minimum salary is $38,570; salary negotiable based on experience and
education; 22 days annual vacation; generous insurance, and Ohio state
employee or alternative retirement.

Alden Library, the main facility on the Ohio University Athens campus
includes over 2 million volumes with 50 professionals and 65 support
staff.  The Library is a member of CRL, ARL, and OhioLINK.  Ohio University
is a residential campus with a student population of 16,700 undergraduates
and 3,000 graduate and medical students.

The Ohio University Libraries subscribes to approximately 250 journals
published in Africa; excluding bound and microfilm journals there are
approximately 110,000 books and the equivalent of 130,000 Africa-related
volumes in microtext. Beyond basic support for the whole of Africa, the
collection concentrates on West Africa (Nigeria); East Africa (Kenya,
Tanzania, Uganda) and Southern Africa.

The African Studies Program is a designated Title VI National Resource
Center for Africa supported by the U.S. Department of Education.  The
Program provides students, scholars and members of the community with
opportunities to further develop their understanding of
Africa.  Approximately 50 faculty members in more than 25 departments
participate in the study of Africa across the University. The Center for
International Studies offers a Master of Arts in International Affairs
(MAIA) degree with a major concentration in African Studies.
