This individual will lead change to shape the Libraries' mix of traditional and digital resources and scholarly services to support the research and instructional mission of the University. The Assistant/Associate Dean will build on the Libraries' leadership role within the campus community in support of scholarly services and digital initiatives. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant/Associate Dean is one of four Assistant/Associate Deans, is a member of the Dean's Council and management councils in the Libraries and in Information Services. Responsibilities:* Provides strong and visionary leadership for library-wide collection development practices, digital and print preservation, digital initiatives and scholarly services for University of Kansas Libraries including special collections and the archives. * Directs and manages recruitment and evaluation for library faculty and staff in collection development, preservation, special collections, and scholarly services.* Maintains current knowledge with all aspects of scholarly communication issues, higher education trends and research needs in the context of rapidly developing technologies.* Provides strategic and innovative direction and oversight of an expanding program to support and sustain faculty research and instructional efforts through programs such as digital scholarship, data services and intellectual property rights. Serves as the Libraries' primary liaison to University entities engaged in digital scholarship, research support and new degree programs. * Provides collaborative leadership with campus Information Technology, other campus units, and consortia in coordinating and developing digital publications and electronic repositories.* Works closely with members of the Libraries' management team, academic administrators, subject liaisons, digital and preservation teams and faculty to integrate the Libraries' role into the research and instructional programs of the university.* Serves as a member of the Libraries' management team, contributing to strategic planning efforts, program development and assessment, budget formulation and allocation of resources in support of the Libraries' mission.* Administers collection budget of more than $7 million. * Seeks creative and collaborative funding opportunities, and fosters grant initiatives.* Represents the Libraries within the university, and on committees and forums at the state and at the national level.Qualifications: Required for Assistant Dean* Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program* Minimum 5 years' experience in increasingly responsible academic or research library management positions* Collection development leadership experience as evidenced by oversight of a collection development program in a large academic/ research library, or equivalent* Substantial knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication including the management, development, creation and preservation of original resources and digital collections as evidenced by contributions to the profession* Excellence in communication skills as evidenced through review of application materials* Substantial knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication, information technologies, preservation, data management and higher education as evidenced by a strong record of scholarship, service and leadership in the profession* A record of effective collaborative efforts involving diverse faculty, library staff, Required for Associate DeanIn addition to the requirements for Assistant Dean, for appointment as Associate Dean, the successful candidate must meet these requirements:* 7 years of experience at the level of department head or senior management position in the library of a doctoral granting institution * Substantial record of scholarship in one or more of the core areas of this positionDesired for both Assistant and Associate Dean* Advanced subject degree * Proficiency in a language other than English.* Experience with international or diversity programs* Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others.TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of the University faculty.
