This position has three major functions: to serve as editor-in-chief of ACRL's official monthly news magazine, C&RL News (average size 84+ pages); to develop a marketing plan for ACRL programs and services and coordinate with other ACRL staff; and to solicit, edit, and write press releases, reports, and communications about ACRL activities. These duties will include but not be limited to: soliciting articles and new stories to provide best content to readers; writing columns; developing editorial and production schedules; developing and implementing marketing plans; establishing guidelines for journal's content on the Web page and establishing annual editorial calendar. The editor-in-chief has budget responsibility for revenues and expenses. This position requires knowledge of the following: academic librarianship and higher education budgeting and planning; journalism; editorial practices and procedures; marketing/promotion; design and aesthetics for publication design as well as marketing and Web materials design. Must have experience using desktop publishing software (Adobe In Design preferred), spreadsheets, relational databases, word processing, and e-mail; and have familiarity with Web authoring programs (Dreamweaver, etc.), wikis, blogs and knowledge of HTML. Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as a member of a team, detail-oriented, and ability to meet strict deadlines are essential. ALA-accredited MLS required; supervisory experience a plus. Starting salary from $43,000. ALA has an excellent medical/dental package, generous paid vacation, and retirement annuity.
