COORDINATOR OF TECHNICAL SERVICES

LIBRARY DEPARTMENT

 

Full-time, tenure-track library faculty position available August 2007.  Nine-month contract and highly competitive salary (with possible summer employment). Instructor/Assistant Professor rank depending on qualifications. Coordinate the Library’s technical services operations and staffing including acquisitions, serials management, cataloging, and metadata services.  Collaborate in the management of the technical services aspects of Government Documents and Special Collections.  Establish policies, procedures, and priorities for operations within the technical services unit in consultation with unit faculty and staff.  Oversee the operation of technical services systems, services, and data management activities crucial to the support of the library’s programmatic goals.  Serve as the technical services unit’s expert with regard to integrated library system and ancillary system operations.  Set goals and develop procedures designed to facilitate the prompt and cost-effective procurement of online and print resources for all Library collections.  Monitor day-to-day expenditure of the acquisition budget and develop mechanisms for reporting budget information to relevant individuals within and beyond the library.  Monitor the performance of external content providers.  Coordinate support for the acquisition, processing and maintenance of subscriptions to online and print materials.  Monitor trends in library services, technologies, and operations and analyze resource management workflows and technologies in light of these trends, implementing those designed to streamline processes and improve service outcomes for the University community.  Supervise personnel and processes involved in resource acquisition and in serials and online resource management.  Work collaboratively with the Catalog Librarian to supervise personnel and processes involved in cataloging activities and metadata services.  Provide reference service at the main reference desk during assigned evenings and weekends and participate in collection development and departmental liaison activities.  Serve as an academic advisor to University students.  Share in University/Library Department governance through participation and/or service on University-wide or Library Department committees. To be granted tenure the incumbent must be enrolled in and have made significant progress towards a second graduate degree, which must be at minimum a masters degree program, though a doctoral program is preferred.  Millersville University is one of 14 institutions of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.  The Library employs 12 faculty and 11 support staff.  Library faculty are full members of the University Faculty with all of the rights and responsibilities of other faculty including eligibility for promotion and sabbatical leaves.

 

Required: American Library Association accredited master’s degree.  Minimum of four years professional experience managing a library unit responsible for acquisitions, serials and/or electronic resources management.  Substantial experience with electronic information resources, technologies, and services.  Strong commitment to, and knowledge of, current trends and issues in technical services management.  Minimum of four years experience supervising library staff.  Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.  Minimum of four years professional experience in an academic library.  Demonstrated experience in identifying and implementing new software programs, practices, and procedures.  Evidence of commitment to scholarly growth.  Successful campus interview and teaching demonstration.   

Preferred:  Second master’s degree or doctorate in a relevant field.  Professional experience as a team member in a unit responsible for managing technical services functions beyond acquisitions and serials.  Detailed knowledge of the Voyager integrated library system or a database/budgeting system of equivalent scope, complexity, and functionality.  Experience in fund allocation and management.  Experience in providing reference service.  Knowledge of, and experience in, cataloging library materials.
