Metadata Librarian

development, application, and management of
metadata for the UCSD Libraries' digital assets
and to participate in the advancement of metadata
expertise in the profession.


Responsibilities of the Position

The incumbent will:
·        Identify and apply appropriate metadata
format and content standards, formulate METS
profiles for object classes, and develop metadata
crosswalks for digital objects for the UCSD Libraries
·        Plan, monitor, and assess metadata
migration, transformation, and enhancement projects
·        Provide ongoing data review and analysis
of digital objects and their metadata, including quality assurance
·        Collaborate with the UCSD Libraries'
data providers and repository managers to develop
cost effective and efficient strategies and
reliable data streams for producing and
normalizing metadata and importing it into the Digital Asset Management System
·        Contribute, under the guidance of the
Unit Head and Department Head, to the formulation
and implementation of policies and standards for
descriptive, administrative (technical, source,
and rights), and structural metadata used to
support the production, management of and access
to UCSD Libraries' digital assets
·        Maintain metadata documentation, in
print and web formats, for the UCSD Libraries'
digital projects and for unit activities
·        Participate in the ongoing development
of metadata standards and best practices,
including attending appropriate conferences and
meetings and collaborating with other groups similarly engaged.


Required Qualifications

    * Professional degree from a library school,
or other appropriate degree or equivalent
experience in one or more fields relevant to library services
    * A minimum of two years experience working
with metadata in a digital library environment
    * Demonstrated knowledge of principles and
practices in organizing information, including
key metadata format and content standards
    * Demonstrated knowledge of the issues and
trends in digital library development and metadata standards
    * Experience with data preparation and
analysis and with data processing tools, including experience using XML
    * Excellent oral and written communication skills
    * Excellent analytic and problem solving
skills, including an aptitude for complex, analytical, and detailed work
    * Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement
projects and to participate successfully in multiple, simultaneous projects
    * Excellent organization skills; both initiative and follow through
    * Ability to work independently as well as
collegially in a complex, rapidly changing and
culturally diverse environment with various groups of library staff

Desirable Qualifications
    * Experience in an academic library environment
    * Experience with library systems that manage
and provide access to digital objects
    * Experience with workflow analysis and representation
    * Familiarity with schema development
    * Familiarity with the OAIS reference model
    * Familiarity with the Resource Description Framework (RDF)
