Cornell University Libraries Metadata Librarian Position

Unit/Department: Metadata Services, Discovery Systems and Services

Position Description:  Cornell University Libraries (CUL) seeks an
energetic and productive staff member to join the Metadata Services
Department < http://metadata.library.cornell.edu/>. Under the supervision
of the Head of Metadata Services, the incumbent provides metadata
consultation, design, and development services to facilitate the uses of
digital and analog information for research and education across a wide
array of academic disciplines and to support scholarly communication and
CUL collection management efforts.

Actively participates in the library's research and development efforts and
in local and national discussions relating to the access, retrieval,
description, preservation, and management of objects in digital library
systems. Works with the Head of Metadata Services to plan projects and
grants within the unit. Consults with faculty and staff on a variety of
metadata and information organization needs.

Works closely with CUL staff throughout Discovery Systems and Services
(DSS) as well as other divisions of Information Technology and Technical
Services to enhance access to the library's collections. Plays an active
role in professional organizations inside and outside of the CUL community.

Requirements:

Required:   MLS or equivalent graduate degree.   Demonstrated experience
with a range of software applications supporting the development of digital
libraries using current and evolving metadata standards and associated
technologies, including Dublin Core and MARC. Knowledge of XML Schema (e.g.
LOM, TEI, VRA Core, or EAD). Excellent communication and analytic skills
including the ability to work well within a team environment with diverse
groups of library staff.  Interest in professional development activities,
including research and participation in professional organizations.

Desired:  Working knowledge of relational database design or
SQL.    Working knowledge of the use of cataloging principles and tools
such as AACR/RDA and authority files, as well as the specifications and
standards that support thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading
lists, taxonomies, or ontologies.  Prior professional experience in an
academic or special library.  Working knowledge of one or more foreign
languages.

College and Research Libraries' Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in 2002.
