This position reports to the Collection Development Librarian, Thomas Cooper Library. The Assistant Collection Development Librarian will participate in the regular operation of the Collection Development Department. The department is responsible for selection, evaluation, and management of the University's general collections of books, serials, and electronic resources. The Assistant Collection Development Librarian also assesses the effectiveness of existing electronic resources, coordinates the evaluation and selection of new electronic resources, and works with the Library's consortia partners to expand access to electronic library resources. The Assistant Collection Development Librarian will serve on the Collection Development Team and Collection Development Committee and also as liaison to one or more academic units. The University of South Carolina enrolls approximately 17,000 undergraduate students and 8,000 graduate students on the Columbia campus. The Thomas Cooper Library owns in excess of 2.5 million volumes, subscribes to 9000 journals in print and provides access to a wide variety of print and electronic resources. The Library is a member of SOLINET, OCLC, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Center for Research Libraries. The Library participates in regional consortia, including PASCAL and Carolina Consortium. Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS; demonstrated knowledge and work experience in the acquisition, collection development or management of electronic resources; effective oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work with diverse groups toward common goals. Preferred: Two years of post MLS experience with specific responsibilities in collection development; computer skills, including EXCEL; familiarity with library allocation and budgeting practice; experience working with vendors and library consortia; familiarity with Innovative integrated library systems. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience, beginning at $34,000. Faculty status, tenure-track. Benefits include medical, dental, state retirement or optional retirement plan.
