American University University Librarian American University invites applications and nominations for the position of University Librarian. American University seeks a creative leader with a passion for service, a clear vision of the library's central mission in supporting teaching, learning, and research at a diverse liberal arts university, and a demonstrated capacity to meet the intellectual, technological, and legal challenges faced by academic libraries. The University Librarian is a tenured member of the faculty, reports directly to the University Provost, sits with the other academic deans on the Dean's Council, and serves on the Provost's Council. The University Librarian is responsible for all library operations, including finance, human resources, information technology, facilities and fund-raising. He or she manages a budget of over $8 million and leads a vibrant and diverse team-based organization comprised of 17 library faculty and over 50 full-time library support staff. The University's collection includes over one million volumes and 17, 250 serials in all formats primarily housed in the Jack I. & Dorothy G. Bender Library and Learning Resources Center. The University is an active member of the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), with direct access to more than five million volumes via a shared Endeavor system that includes an online public catalog and numerous bibliographic and full text databases. WRLC operates a shared offsite storage facility in Maryland. The Music Library serves students in the Katzen Arts Center, and additional 24 hour computer services are offered in The Anderson Computing Complex. The University Library works closely with the independently administered Pence Law Library of American University's Washington College of Law. The successful candidate will be an experienced and innovative library professional with an ALA accredited MLS, leadership in professional organizations, and a demonstrated record of progressively more responsible administrative positions within an academic library. He or she must understand and be able to work well with a wide range of constituents, including university administrators, faculty, students, staff, Friends of the Library, and consortial groups. The ability to lead within a collaborative, team-oriented environment is essential, as is the ability to advocate for the library and to raise funds to support its mission.
