Social Sciences Reference Librarian --  University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill -- North Carolina
 


ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
POSITION: Social Sciences Reference Librarian

AVAILABLE: February 1, 2007

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a motivated,
innovative, collaborative, and knowledgeable individual to provide
specialized research services and instruction to students and faculty in
assigned social science subject areas and to serve as the Department's
liaison for distance education. The position offers an excellent
opportunity to work with a talented staff in a research library that
combines state of the art technology with traditional reference and
instructional services.  
RESPONSIBILITIES 
·Provide general and specialized reference service at the Davis
(Main) Library Reference Desk and via online chat, IM and email, including
a night and weekend rotation.  
·Develop and deliver high quality outreach and instructional
services to faculty, students, and scholars in assigned academic
disciplines to support the discovery, use, and integration of the
library's collections into research and the curriculum. 
·Develop web-based resources to support access and delivery of
reference and instructional services to subject-specific areas. 
·Share in the development of the social sciences reference
collection. 
·Work closely with colleagues in other public service units,
including reference, instruction, and interlibrary loan, to coordinate
distance learning services and serve as the Reference Department's liaison
for distance education-related activities. 
The Social Sciences Reference Librarian will report to the Head of the
Reference Desk Section of the Davis Reference Department. In addition to
the Reference Desk section, the Reference Department includes Government
Documents, the Maps Collection, Electronic Reference Services, GIS
services and a Collection Management section. For more information visit

The Reference Department currently includes 13 other librarians, 7 support
staff, and several student assistants. 
QUALIFICATIONS  
Required
·ALA-accredited Masters degree.
·Background/experience in the Social Sciences with preference
given to education, psychology, sociology or social work.  
·Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues,
students, faculty and other library patrons.
·Strong commitment to public service.  
·Knowledge of available statistical data for the social sciences. 
·Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
·Knowledge of, and proficiency with, computers, the Internet,
electronic databases, and web authoring
·Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and applying them in an
academic library setting. 

Preferred 
·Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and
statistical software. 
·A minimum of one year of reference and library instruction
experience in an academic library; internships, assistantships and
practicums will be considered.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is
commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Standard state benefits
