Associate – Reference, Electronic and Instruction Services Librarian

The Texas Tech law school is located on one of the largest campuses in the United States. The law school, while relatively new (opened in 1967, ABA approved in 1970), is dynamic and growing, with Centers of Excellence in Military Law, Biodefense Law and Water Law; and, Clinic Programs in Civil Practice, Criminal Justice, Tax and Advanced Dispute Resolution. The law school is adding a large expansion that will include a “Courtroom of the Future” with a generous endowment for advanced technology. The 27 member library and technology staff has doubled in size during the last 6 years. Growth and opportunity abound here.

Lubbock’s very low cost of living, excellent weather, and minimal traffic combined with the casual (dress down is the standard and you can even wear jeans to work ), collegial, but very professional library environment provide for an ideal job opportunity. Candidates should have a JD and a Library Science degree with at least 3 years experience. For someone pursuing or completing a Library Science degree (who already possesses a JD degree) previous employment in legal or related fields could be considered. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Associate - Reference, Electronic and Instruction Services Librarian
The first priority of all members of the Law Library team is to serve the Law Library and Law School’s
faculty, students and other customers. This job summary illustrates only minimum standards, and,
team members will perform tasks assigned by supervisor(s) with the goal of first-class customer
service. Team members will be readily available, visible and accessible to faculty, students, and other
customers.
The team member in this position serves primarily as the library’s point person for electronic resources.
Representative duties include serving as liaison with various vendors of electronic materials such as
Lexis, Westlaw, BNA, and other vendors, as well as, identifying, evaluating and recommending both
continued use of existing electronic resources and acquisition of new resources. This librarian will
work closely with others including the reference librarians, web page and content manager, and
collection services librarians.
The team member also creates library publications, including, but not limited to newsletters, brochures,
and other publications designed to inform library users about electronic resources. They will take a
lead in creating the library’s research guides and career bibliographies.
Opportunities for teaching and providing instruction are significant. The library offers a “Certificate in
Excellence in Legal Research” curriculum which consists of a number of short courses during all
semesters. This librarian will participate in teaching those courses.
All librarians participate in providing reference and research services to students, faculty, and other
customers of the law library. Librarians generally serve 6 10 hours at the reference desk each week
and may work 2-3 Sundays each semester. In addition, all librarians participate in developing new
ways to serve faculty, staff and students.
Qualifications: JD and MLS from ABA/ALA accredited schools. Three years of library experience with
sound knowledge of online resources and technologies (substantial experience with college-level
training in legal bibliography and electronic databases, or previous legal experience, may substitute
for the experience requirement). Strong customer service orientation and the ability to work well independently
and with others.
