METADATA LIBRARIAN DATABASE MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Metadata Librarian - Database Management Specialist provides expertise in developing and
maintaining metadata and cataloging to effectively provide access to information resources covering all subjects and
languages, according to nationally recognized standards. The position is responsible for the technical and bibliographic

and metadata management of the Libraries cataloging module and content management databases, including coordination
of data files and processes for collaborative projects.

This position provides technical assistance to departmental staff members, including support for problem-solving related to

workflows, metadata and cataloging, and authority control; instructs staff in the use of the automated catalogs and
databases maintained by the department; serves as liaison to vendors and integrated library system groups; investigates and

develops applications for improving access to electronic resources; and prepares reports and communications. Metadata
and cataloging duties include needs assessment; metadata scheme specification and adaptation; metadata interoperability
planning; project management; and working with partners from the Libraries, campus and consortia. The Specialist
examines and designs workflows to improve access to information; with others defines policy for system use and
management of data; assures quality control of the online catalogs; develops, coordinates, and maintains authority control

processes post-cataloging; coordinates work with vendors in obtaining records and their import/export into the online
catalogs; develops specifications, analyzes and tests database and loader requirements; creates customized reports of data

in the online catalogs; and collaborates with other library personnel/units in defining and developing special projects.

Reporting to the Coordinator of Metadata and Preservation Services, the Specialist also shares in monitoring the
development of national standards regarding metadata for digital and other resources; exploring new information
technologies; and participates in the development and evaluation of departmental services. The Specialist serves as a
member of the department’s planning group and participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces and teams.
Metadata and Preservation Services is comprised of faculty (3.5 FTE) and support staff (7.3 FTE) in the Morgan Library.
The services are organized into these units: Metadata and Cataloging, Database Management and Preservation. The
department is responsible for provision of metadata, management of the cataloging module and content management
database to enhance access for users, digitization and conservation of materials and projects such as inventorying. Its
activity is guided by an ambitious Libraries strategic plan that gives priority to digital repository development,
development of learning technology for information literacy and collaborative digital projects, local digital collection

development, user-based web services and assessment.

Colorado State University Libraries is moving forward on several initiatives for digital services, increased consortia
arrangements, and new options for faculty and students. This position will continue to evolve as innovations are developed

to meet these new challenges.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS; one year experience using AACR2 and MARC formats with one
or more of the following standards: Dublin Core, METS/MODS, OpenURL, OAI-PMH, VRA; knowledge of authority
control principles and procedures; experience in a large library working directly with applications of integrated library

systems; an understanding of loaders and interfaces between systems and the ability to write specifications; academic or

research library technical services experience; knowledge of how digital library collections are used in an academic setting;

experience in creation and management of metadata; the ability to work independently, in a team, or in a project-oriented

environment; evidence of excellent communication and interpersonal skills; excellent leadership and collaboration skills;

ability to meet tenure and promotion criteria. Desired: Demonstrated initiative to innovative approaches for improving
operations and services of research libraries; knowledge of Innovative Interfaces, ContentDM, and OCLC.

RANK AND SALARY: Faculty status and responsibilities. Twelve-month tenure track appointment with contract
reviewed annually until tenure is granted. Rank is dependent upon qualifications. Salary is competitive and commensurate

with experience and qualifications.
