DIGITAL RESEARCH SPECIALIST (REPOSITORIES)
ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL POSITION

POSITION: This new position develops scripts and programs that support emerging technologies for the
University Libraries. The specialist will support a variety of library technology projects, including the implementation

of repository databases and image management.

The new Research and Development Services Department will grow to five staff with programming, systems,
web, and instructional design skills. Its activity is guided by an ambitious library strategic plan that gives
priority to digital repository development, development of learning technology for information literacy, and
collaborative digital projects. This includes local digital collection development, user-based web services, and
assessment. Reporting to the Coordinator, Research and Development Department, the specialist will
contribute to departmental planning, development of policy and procedures, investigation of new technologies,
and assessment of departmental activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Writes programs that are compatible with library networked services
Able to adapt to a variety of programming environments that may include, but are not limited to ASP, SQL, MySQL, C#, Java, PHP, HTML, XML, Perl, and Linux

Writes back-end processes and user interfaces that interface with databases
Creates programs and scripts to manage and manipulate information in a database environment
Documents scripts, programs, and processes
Collaborates on repositories and image management projects
Develops programs that interface between repositories
Assists in analyzing, developing, implementing, and supporting specialized research and analysis tools for the discovery, selection, and delivery of digital resources

Interacts with campus community, including Information Systems and Academic Computing and Networking Services, to gather requirements

Backs up other Research and Development staff.
Provides assistance in the development and use of online curriculum materials
Assists in configuring, managing, updating, troubleshooting, and maintaining research computer servers
Pursues professional growth and development opportunities
Performs other duties as assigned

This position will continue to evolve as needed to meet the new challenges of library digital initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Bachelors or advanced degree in Computer Science or related field
Proficient in one or more current programming languages
Demonstrated willingness to work in a variety of programming environments
Proficient in one or more current database packages
Excellent collaboration skills
Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills
Strong interpersonal skills and clear written communication skills
Demonstration of pursuit of professional growth and development
Desired:
Experience with heterogeneous operating systems environment such as Windows, Linux, or Unix
Knowledge of issues and trends in data management and applications
Knowledge of digital asset management systems
Proficient in using languages such as C#, VB, or PHP
Knowledge in some or all of the following is preferred: .NET framework, ASP, SQL, MySQL, C#, Java, PHP, HTML, XML, Perl, or Linux

Experience in PC configuration, support, and troubleshooting
Information technology provider experience in an academic library

RANK AND SALARY: Full-time, administrative professional position. Salary is competitive and
commensurate with experience and qualifications. Insurance benefits are provided through a “cafeteria”
allocation; administrative professionals may select from several options for medical, life, dental, and personal
disability insurance, as well as retirement plans; 24 days of vacation and 15 days of sick leave annually;
optional deferred compensation.
