Job Description
J.Y. Joyner Library at East Carolina University (ECU) seeks an enthusiastic, service-oriented, and innovative individual for the position of Systems Department Head. Reporting to the Associate Director for Technical Services and Systems, responsibilities include leading the Systems Department; providing vision and leadership in strategic planning for the library's information technology needs; innovative use of existing resources and expansion of services; representing Joyner's technology concerns on library, university, and external committees; application of new technology; planning and managing large-scale complex projects; developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with other information technology groups throughout the University, including Information Technology & Computing Services (ITCS) and Laupus Health Sciences Library, and with other University of North Carolina libraries.

The primary goal of the Systems Department is to support the operations, services, and programs of Academic Library Services by developing, enhancing, and maintaining the unit's information technology resources. Members of the Systems Department are responsible for managing the library website, commercially produced library applications, such as the Horizon Integrated Library System, SFX, ILLiad, and EZProxy, and locally developed resources like the North Carolina Periodicals Index and the Pirate Source electronic subject guides.

Development of library applications and resources is an important function of the Systems Department. Members of the Systems Department are often engaged in systems analysis, consulting, and programming activities with library committees and representatives from other departments to complete application development projects. In addition, the Systems Department is responsible for the maintenance of more than 400 public and staff computers.  

       
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited master's degree; working knowledge of best practices in the development, application, and assessment of information technologies in libraries and higher education; commitment to teamwork and quality service; five years of progressively responsible experience as a professional librarian in a systems-related role; substantive supervisory experience; strong technical skills; working knowledge of library protocols and information standards; superior oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students; and ability to achieve tenure through effective job performance, scholarly publication, and service activities.

Preferred Qualifications: Second master's degree, preferably in an information technology-related discipline; systems experience at an academic library and/or a library of comparable size; systems administrator experience (ILS or other enterprise library system); experience in ILS procurement and deployment; demonstrated ability to set priorities and resolve competing demands; and demonstrated track record of implementing applicable technologies.
