REVISED
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE LIBRARIES
FACULTY
VACANCY
Position: Cataloging
Coordinator
Appointment Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor
Salary: $48,000.00 minimum
Available: February 1, 2007
The University of
Tennessee Libraries
seeks a Cataloging Coordinator who is user and access focused and will help UT
Libraries move forward in the changing world of providing access to
information. The Cataloging Coordinator is a leader in the Technical Services
and Digital Access Team (TSDA), reporting directly to the Team Leader. TSDA is
composed of 6 librarians and 25 staff plus student workers in four interrelated
and cross-trained areas: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Digital Access and Serials.
Cataloging activities occur in all four areas. Two people report directly to
the Cataloging Coordinator: a librarian and an exempt para-professional. In
addition, six paraprofessionals report to the exempt para-professional and are
thus indirectly supervised by the Coordinator. TSDA catalogs for the main
library, 3 branches and 2 affiliate libraries. Some branches do limited
cataloging under the direction of the Cataloging Coordinator. Most monographs
are received pre-cataloged. The team is incorporating more non-MARC cataloging
into daily operations, and one librarian works exclusively with metadata.
The
Coordinator investigates and implements new cataloging processes for the team ,
ensuring consistency among all the units. Other Catalog Coordinator
responsibilities include monitoring developments in cataloging and digital
resource management, and helping team members implement them. The incumbent
works with the Metadata Librarian to incorporate metadata creation into the
departmental workflow. The Cataloging Coordinator directs the implementation of
ideas from faculty and staff, and serves as a resource for cataloging questions
and problems, especially for non-book material.
Because cataloging is shared among many staff, important responsibilities of
this position include setting an overall tone of cooperation, designing and
implementing quality control procedures and arranging for training activities.
A member of the TSDA Management Team, the Coordinator participates in setting
policy and direction for the entire team.
This is a
tenure track faculty position and includes time for research and to provide
service to meet University expectations for faculty. The Cataloging
Coordinator is encouraged to interact with library users by serving as a
subject librarian in a designated area, working at the reference desk, or
providing academic liaison that matches specific skills and interests.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree from an ALA
accredited program At least three years cataloging experience (2 years
post-MLS) including original cataloging of multiple formats. Working knowledge
of cataloging tools, standards (present and emerging), and OCLC. Demonstrated
interest in the application of technology to the principles and practices of
bibliographic control. Demonstrated ability to teach, work and lead others in
a production-orientated environment. Demonstrated ability to adjust to changing
priorities. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a
working knowledge of at least one foreign language.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional cataloging experience.
Familiarity with multiple foreign languages. Experience with cataloging
specialized formats (e.g. audio/visual, cartographic, and/or electronic
materials); knowledge of non-MARC metadata schema. Supervisory experience is
strongly preferred.
