The Library of Virginia is seeking a Monographs Cataloger for its
Technical Services Program.
The incumbent will create original catalog records, as well as complete
copy cataloging, for library materials in a variety of formats, as well
as oversee several bindery and processing functions, including training
and guidance to staff. 

Technical Services is a department of fifteen: 8 professional, 3
paraprofessional, and 4 support staff. Catalogers are responsible for a
great variety of subjects and formats, including state and regional
history and culture, maps, broadsides, sheet music, posters, ephemera,
and audio visual and electronic titles. Twenty five percent of the
cataloging is original work. Catalogers contribute to the Enhance
program for bibliographic records and contribute name authority records
to NACO. 

The Library of Virginia is the state library and archives for the
Commonwealth of Virginia. It houses the most comprehensive collection of
materials on Virginia government, genealogy, literature and culture, as
well as local, state, and regional history available anywhere. The
Library's printed, manuscript, map, and photographic collections attract
researchers from across the country and the world, while the Library's

Qualifications

*	MLS from an ALA-accredited library school required. 
*	Certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification
preferred. 
*	Library experience with library standards and operating
procedures, technical services, online bibliographic utilities, and
automated library systems.
	Experience in cataloging; ability to train and oversee support
staff preferred. 
*	Considerable knowledge of standard library operating procedures,
automated library systems and online database searching. 
*	Working knowledge of technical processing, bibliographic
utilities, and local library systems. Working knowledge of cataloging,
AACR2, LCSH, Graphic Materials, LC classification, and authority
control. 
*	Knowledge of bibliographic sources and research techniques,
library physical processing, and preservation. 
	Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, and to work both
independently and as part of a team. 
*	Ability to train and to review the work of library assistants
and support staff preferred. 
*	Must pass a background check.
