The Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) has an opening for a
Catalog/Metadata Librarian at a minimum starting salary of $44,856 per
year.
 Headquartered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., SIL serves the
Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest museum complex, with
holdings of 1.5 million books, manuscripts, and other materials in 20
libraries throughout the Institution.
 
DUTIES: The incumbent is responsible for original and complex copy
cataloging on OCLC and SIRIS (The Smithsonian Institution Research
Information System).  Works closely with Smithsonian Institution Staff
in the selection and application of appropriate metadata schema to
support retrieval and management of digital products.  The incumbent
contributes MARC cataloging for materials in English and foreign
languages in all formats to OCLC and to SIRIS according to national
standards and local policies using LCSH and LC Classification; creates
MARC authority records under national and local guidelines.
Participates in the evaluation and application of current and emerging
metadata standards and determines metadata needs for new digital
resources.  Creates and maintains best practices documentation for
adapting metadata schema for local purposes. 
The incumbent uses promising new metadata/cataloging tools or
technologies, developing strategies for integrating new technologies and
services into existing practices.  Ensures quality control of metadata
used at the SIL.
 
SELECTIVE FACTORS: (Applicants must meet all of these mandatory
requirements in order to be considered qualified to compete for a
position.)  Knowledge of current national cataloging standards and
practices. 
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in metadata standards and
schema.
 
QUALITY RANKING FACTORS: (These factors are not mandatory to be
considered for a position, but will be used to determine the highest
qualified candidates among those who meet the selective factors.)
Ability as demonstrated by experience to create original or complex copy
cataloging records (experience with non-book formats should be noted).
Knowledge of current and emerging metadata standards.  Knowledge in
reading one or more languages other than English to be able to provide
original cataloging for materials in those languages.  Skill in the use
of desktop applications such as MS Word, Excel and Access.
