Position: Student Library Assistant Position - Digitization

Department: Special Collections Library

Hours: 10-15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business
hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).

Required Qualifications:  UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in
liberal arts or information science. Detail oriented. Computer
proficient. Excellent communication skills. Must be able to work
independently.

Preferred: Previous library work experience. Prior experience using a
flatbed scanner.  Interest in Tennessee history, manuscripts, or
librarianship. Familiarity with EAD, MODS, TEI, or other forms of
metadata. Prior experience handling rare and fragile materials. Ability
to read 19th century handwriting.

Duties/Responsibilities:  
*       Scan selected Special Collections materials, including letters,
diaries, photographs, and other historic items
*       Create a MODS and TEI record for each item scanned. In many
cases, this will involve the creation of a transcription of the item
being handled
*       Edit EAD-encoded finding aids for the materials scanned
*       Other duties as assigned

Position: Student Library Assistant Position - Manuscripts

Department: Special Collections Library

Hours: 10-15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business
hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).

Required Qualifications:  UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in
liberal arts or information science. Detail oriented. Excellent
communication skills. Computer proficiency. Must be able to work
independently. 

Preferred: Prior library work experience. Research experience in a
special collections library. Interest in Tennessee history, manuscripts,
or librarianship. HTML experience. Ability to work from 3:30-5:30 pm at
least one day per week.

Duties/Responsibilities:  
*       Arrange and describe collections of archival materials
*       Create finding aids using Encoded Archival Description and
XMetal software
*       Work Special Collections afternoon reference desk on assigned
day by answering the telephone and assisting patrons in the reading room
*       Other duties as assigned

hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).

liberal arts or information science. Detail oriented. Excellent
communication skills. Must be able to work independently.

rare books or librarianship.

Duties/Responsibilities:  
*       Create preliminary catalog records for rare books
*       Process newly-catalogued rare books
*       Shelve rare books
*       Serve as a back-up for the Special Collections reference desk as
needed
*       Other duties as assigned
