JOB TITLE: LIBRARIAN
II-BRANCH LIBRARIAN
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under limited supervision, must be mentally and physically capable of
directing, supervising and coordinating a Florence County Library Branch, to
ensure the provision of effective services to the public. Maintains
Branch Library collections of book and other materials. Assists groups
and individuals in locating and obtaining information. Supervises
professional and non-professional employees. Reports to the Chief of Extension
Services.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervises all functions of a Florence County Library Branch.
Assigns work loads and establishes work schedules; directs and supervises
duties of assigned branch staff. Supervisory duties include instructing;
assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards;
coordinating activities; allocating personnel; selecting new employees; acting
on employee problems; and recommending employees discipline.
Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy;
evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and
assistance as needed.
Coordinates branch services with those of the Main Library.
Participates in collection development activities including, but not
limited to, planning and management, materials selection, review and
acquisition of materials, and policy and procedural development. Develops
special projects and collections as directed.
Provides direct assistance to patrons; answers reference questions in
person and over the phone; explains library policy; handles complaints or
misunderstandings.
Processes intra-library loans of books and materials.
Assists Chief of Extension in preparing the budget. Works with
same to secure and administrates funds from governmental sources and private
sector for library operations.
Participates in library programs as needed.
Promotes branch library programs.
Receives and responds to public inquires, concerns and complaints;
resolves patron and personnel conflicts and issues.
Tracks branch service statistics, assess community needs and make
attendance/operations projections as necessary to make improvements to existing
branch services and programs and to plan effective services for the future.

LIBRARIAN, LIBRARY
Keeps informed of professional developments in library science.
Performs computer data entry to record and retrieve various information
to prepare documents and correspondence.
Attends professional meetings and conferences as deemed necessary.
Works evenings and weekends as required.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various reports and
documents, including job applications, performance appraisals, requisitions,
purchase orders, financial reports, circulation reports, book reviews,
catalogs, statistical reports, activity reports, reference statistics,
attendance sheets, logs, memos, correspondence, etc.
Interacts and communicates with Library Director, Chief of Extension,
Chief of Headquarters, co-workers, subordinates, branch library boards, County
department Directors, managers and employees, S. C. Library Association and
other professional association members, professional peers, S. C. State Library
officials, community groups, vendors, and the general public.
Operates a vehicle and various types of office and other equipment
including computer, printer, Dynix terminal, Telxon units, adding machine,
copier, fax machine, typewriter, microfilm reader/printer, telephone,
audio-visual equipment, laminator, etc.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Shelves books, periodicals and newspapers; weeds collections; moves
furniture and equipment as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND
EXPERIENCE
Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or
university supplemented by two years of library public service experience, some
of which has been in a managerial capacity, or an equivalent combination of
education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills
and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
