The Library of Virginia is seeking a Senior Monographs Cataloger in the
Technical Services Branch of the Collection Management Services
Division. The incumbent will catalog library materials and serve as the
team leader for the monographs program by applying a professional
knowledge based on national standards and local practice. Performs
original and complex copy cataloging for books, maps, and audio visual
materials, by following LC practice, AACR 2 guidelines, OCLC input
standards, and ExLibris requirements. Reviews cataloging created by
other monographs catalogers, contributes to authority work and assists
with special projects. 
Technical Services is a department of fifteen: 8 professional, 3
paraprofessional, and 4 support staff. Catalogers are responsible for a
great variety of subjects and formats, including state and regional
history and culture, maps, broadsides, sheet music, posters, ephemera,
and audio visual and electronic titles. Twenty five percent of the
cataloging is original work. Catalogers contribute to the Enhance
program for bibliographic records and contribute name authority records
to NACO. 
The Library of Virginia is the state library and archives for the
Commonwealth of Virginia. It houses the most comprehensive collection of
materials on Virginia government, genealogy, literature and culture, as
well as local, state, and regional history available anywhere. The

Qualifications

*       Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school
required. 
*       Recent cataloging experience required. 
*       Experience in maps and audio visual cataloging preferred. 
*       Considerable knowledge of cataloging, AACR2, LCSH, LC
classification, NACO, and authority control. 
*       Considerable knowledge of standard library operating procedures,
automated library systems, and online database searching. 
*       Considerable knowledge of technical processing, bibliographic
utilities and local library systems. 
*       Knowledge of preservation guidelines, bibliographic sources, and
research techniques. 
*       Demonstrated ability to train and review the work of library
assistants and support staff. 
*       Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, and to work both
independently and as part of a team. 
*       Excellent customer service and communications skills. 
*       Experience in work direction of support staff preferred. 
*       Must pass a security background check.
