Associate Dean for Library Technology --  University of Alabama at
Tuscaloosa -- Alabama

ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama Libraries seek energetic,
creative, and knowledgeable applicants for the position of Associate Dean
for Library Technology.  The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader
able to work collaboratively in shaping and directing an ambitious vision
and strategic direction for the Libraries' systems and digital technology.
The associate dean will be expected to assess, deploy, and expand library
technologies in a highly collaborative setting and enable the Libraries'
faculty and staff to support the needs of our students and faculty as well
as priorities set by the University. This position supervises 8 FTE
faculty, professional and classified staff that are responsible for
integrated library systems, Web-based delivery of electronic resources,
staff and public workstations, network administration, and development of
the Libraries' digital infrastructure, including Web-based user
interfaces, storage, and database solutions. The Associate Dean will also
work closely with the Libraries' faculty and staff responsible for
technology-dependent programs and services, including a growing digital
initiatives program, Web services, learning commons, distance education
support, and the Sanford Media Resource and Design Center. It is expected
that Library Technology staffing levels will increase and diversify over
the next three years. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate
Dean will be a member of the Dean's Council and the Library Management
Council and will represent the Libraries in the University technology
arena and at key state, regional, and national meetings pertaining to
library and information technology. 
REQUIRED:  MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or appropriate
graduate degree in a computer science field; five-ten years progressively
responsible supervisory and administrative duties relating to library
technology in a diverse academic setting; demonstrated experience with
current issues and best practices in the assessment, development, and
application of information technologies in libraries and higher education,
including programming, systems administration, systems analysis, Web and
systems architecture and platforms; demonstrated success trouble
shooting/problem-solving technical issues; experience with server and
Web development technologies; sophisticated understanding of digital
library technologies; demonstrated ability to provide leadership and
effect change in a highly collaborative environment; proven abilities in
communication, team-building, and problem-solving; and ability to satisfy
promotion and tenure requirements.
ENVIRONMENT:  The University Libraries maintains membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, the Center for Research
Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, SOLINET, and the
Network of Alabama Academic Libraries. The Libraries use Endeavor's
Voyager Integrated Library System. The Libraries' homepage may be accessed
