REPORTS TO:Assistant Chair for Humanities
SALARY:Minimum salary:  $42,000

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the overall development, management and coordination of
Library resources in all formats for the Romance Languages/Area
Studies collections (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian) to
support the University's academic programs in these subject areas as well
as in interdisciplinary humanities programs supported by the University's
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as appropriate. Responsible for
analyzing the University's program in Romance Languages/Area Studies
and collaborating with librarians and the academic faculty to establish
collection profiles, selection guidelines, and preservation, location and
cataloging priorities. Evaluates existing collection strengths and
proposed current collecting intensities. In collaboration with the
Humanities and Social Sciences General Reference Department, builds the
Romance Languages/Area Studies reference collection, and acts as the
collection management coordinator. Also trains selected Library staff in,
and manages the specialized Romance Languages/Area Studies reference
services, bibliographic instruction, and online database services, and
participates in the general reference program, including online chat
services.  Participates in defining collection management goals,
objectives, strategies, performance criteria and materials budgets to
ensure the best possible Library support of the Romance Languages/Area
Studies programs.  In collaboration with the German/Slavic
Languages/Area Studies librarian, the International Documents
Librarian, and others, acts as Library liaison to the various
International Centers on campus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Communicates with appropriate academic faculty. Keeps informed of the
development of academic programs and faculty interest to ensure that
Library collections and services support curriculum and research needs,
and informs clientele about relevant Library issues.
2.Defines goals, establishes objectives, plans and manages budgets, and
coordinates collection development activities with other bibliographers,
specialists, and librarians, with respect to resources for the Romance
Languages/Area Studies collections.
3.Analyzes the Romance Languages/Area Studies collection development
program activities and provides reports, strategies, assessments, and
studies or surveys as required.
4.Participates in the Library fundraising efforts.
5.Participates in the Humanities and Social Sciences General Reference
Department's reference program, and acts as the collection management
coordinator for the Romance Languages/Area Studies Reference
Collection.
6.Responsible for advanced reference in support of Romance
Languages/Area Studies including bibliographic instruction, end
user/database services, and Web-based reference.
7.Prepares bibliographic/Internet guides and other publications in
support of the Library's publication program.
8.Participates in appropriate professional development and continuing
education endeavors, and engages in scholarly research resulting in
publication.
9.Contributes to the Library's planning effort through membership in the
Humanities CM Group, Selectors Committee, and other University and Library
committees and consultative bodies as appropriate.
10.Participates in appropriate professional library organizations on the
regional, national, and international level.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
1.Masters degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited
program, or equivalent professional experience plus advanced degree in
subject specialty.
2.Fluency in Spanish or French.
3.Familiarity with academic literature of that language.
4.Sound knowledge of collection management, reference, and instructional
practices and standards.
5.Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
6.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with faculty, students, and
colleagues.
7.Strong outreach commitment.
8.Competence with information technologies and demonstrated effectiveness
in integrating technology with
 traditional services and resources.
9.Flexible and forward-thinking approach to challenges and opportunities.
10.Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred:
1.Advanced degree in the humanities.
2.Familiarity with the academic literature of one additional romance
language.
3.Familiarity with the history of France and the Iberian Peninsula.
4.Experience managing collections in an academic or research library.
5.Instruction and Reference Desk experience.
6.Experience in an academic library that awards tenure to librarians.
7.Record of contributions in service and scholarship that demonstrates the
ability to achieve tenure.

Studies Collections Department, make up the Collections Services Division.
