Since it is a new employee, I would recommend only sending it locally. If
this employee has had interaction with the other 11 locations and has
already built up a name for himself/herself, I would send it out to all

Subject: Communicating tragedies


The brother of a new employee was killed over the weekend in a freak
accident in Iraq, not by enemy fire.  We are a decentralized company with
staff in 12 locations across the U.S. and in the U.K.  We are debating
whether to send a message to the entire company that an employee family
member died, or just to local employees.  I'd appreciate knowing how your
company handles such tragedies?
