Subject: Job posting: Vocal Justice Program Manager

Vocal Justice Program Manager

At Vocal Justice, we believe that every young person, especially Black and Brown youth, deserves an education that affirms their racial and ethnic identities, builds their critical consciousness, and prepares them to speak out against the very injustices they may have experienced firsthand. That’s why we built a rigorous, fun, and justice-oriented public speaking program that helps middle and high school youth recognize the power of their authentic voices and use them for social justice. To reach young people, we train and compensate educators across the U.S. to facilitate our program at their schools, either as part of an existing class or as an afterschool program. To date, Vocal Justice has reached over 30 educators and 700 young people. We’ve raised about $700K in less than one year, including support from Echoing Green, Camelback, VELA, and the Social Innovation Fellowship from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Over the next three years, we will expand our program from about 25 to 100+ schools, and find ways to engage young people outside of the school setting. Our long-term goal is to use learnings from our direct service programs to inform structural changes to the U.S. education system, advocating for new curriculum standards, assessments, and funding allocations that make social justice education and youth power core to every school. We’re eager to hire a Program Manager to help bring us closer to a world where every young person is inspired and prepared to advocate for justice — wherever they choose to lead in life. The Program Manager will oversee and revise our curriculum; recruit, select, and train teachers to integrate our program into their schools; gather and review feedback from participants; brainstorm and oversee new initiatives to expand our program reach; and serve as a thought partner to the founder. We’re looking for someone who is frustrated by our education system’s failure to build leaders for liberation, yet optimistic about our ability to change that; someone who thinks expansively about how to integrate critical pedagogy and youth voice into schools across unique geographies and sociopolitical contexts; someone who moves quickly, but with intention and care; someone who brings levity and love to their work; someone who is as thoughtful as they are vocal; and someone who is eager to tackle the ever-changing tasks of a burgeoning social venture on a bold mission to rethink what education can and should look like. This is a full-time, remote role that begins March 2022. A two-year commitment is required. The first-year salary is fixed at $70,000 and will increase annually based on performance and organizational budget. Benefits include healthcare, unlimited vacation, and funding for work equipment and professional development. No specific degree or years of work experience is needed. Every applicant must be legally authorized to be a full-time employee in the U.S. The Program Manager will report directly to the Founder and CEO, Shawon Jackson, who is based in Oakland, CA; and work closely with our Special Projects Manager, Bess Cohen, who is based in Chicago, IL. Learn more below. If interested, submit your application by Sunday, January 30 at 5PM PT. Email Shawon if you have questions or concerns: [log in to unmask]
