As a member of the senior leadership team, the Associate Director assists in the establishment of goals, initiatives, training, priorities, policies, and strategic planning for Knoxville Area Units' Affirmative Action efforts and Equal Opportunity compliance, including complaint resolution and educational workshops for faculty, staff, and students. The Associate Director will oversee, manage and direct the investigation of complaints of discrimination and harassment by a team of three assistant directors/investigators. Job Functions/Responsibilities: LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT -Oversees, manages and directs the timely and thorough equal employment and civil rights related investigations from intake through the issuance of the report. -Leads, supervises, guides and directs a team of three assistant directors/investigators; manages work flow and makes assignments. -Determines appropriate manner of complaint resolution; complex or extraordinary matters with potentially far-reaching implications are to be made in consultation with the AVC/Director and/or Title IX Coordinator. -Collaborates in the development and establishment of goals, initiatives, training, priorities, policies, and strategic planning for Knoxville Area Units' Affirmative Action efforts and Equal Opportunity compliance, including complaint resolution and educational workshops for faculty, staff, and students. -Works with students, faculty and staff using formal and informal procedures to help resolve conflicts. -Apprises students and employees of their rights and responsibilities related to the complaint and investigation processes. -Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with university partners and offices in order to promote collegiality and trust. -Responds to guidance and direction provided by the Title IX Coordinator particularly as it relates to investigations; establish good working relationships with Title IX staff. -Contributes to the development of a strategic plan of OED and a revision of its mission, vision, and values statements. OPERATIONS -Assists in managing the daily operations of the Office of Equity & Diversity including budget development and management. -Represents OED on DDE and university committees, work groups, and task forces. -Participates in and encourages continuing education and professional development. -Engages in community building and service to benefit the office, division, and university. -Oversee the development of files, databases, and reporting systems related to investigations; creates reports as directed. -Assists the AVC/Director in interpreting University obligations under Titles VI, VII and IX, the ADA and the ADEA as well as other state and federal civil rights regulations and guidelines. -Responsible for all aspects of Title VI and Vets 100 obligations including working with the Offices of Research and the General Counsel's office on compliance documents, plans, and Assurances of Compliance. -Performs other duties as assigned EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT -Assists with the development and delivery of programs related to equity, accessibility, diversity, and related topics. -Provides guidance and information to the campus community on EEO, Title IX, and related responsibilities. -Develops content for print and digital media for dissemination to students and employees explaining investigative procedures and processes, the rights & responsibilities of parties, applicable policies, and the like. Key Areas of Responsibility REQUIREMENTS: Education: Master's degree required. Doctoral degree and other licenses/certifications preferred. Required level/type of experience: - Six years experience in higher education with supervisory experience, leadership roles and responsibilities, and a demonstrated commitment to ensuring and advancing the principles of diversity, access, equity, and inclusion. Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities: - J.D. Preferred Competencies/Qualifications: - Master's degree. - Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, interpersonal, and computer. - Ability to function in team environment (collaborate, contribute, and take direction). - Ability to self-direct, work independently, and take ownership. - Ability to maintain an appropriate level of confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and maintain effective working relationships. - Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in a higher education. - Knowledge of state and federal civil rights guidance, laws, and best practices as applied in a higher education setting. - Ability to gather, analyze, and report (orally and in writing) facts, information, and conclusions.
