Career Counselor Position - UT’s Center for Career Development

 

Position Summary:

The career counselor serves on the career exploration and campus engagement team providing counseling and programming to support students’ major and career goal development. The counselor creates and manages experiential learning programs designed to help students, primarily first and second years, explore careers and industries of interest. 

 

Position Responsibilities:

1.       Conduct individual and group career counseling sessions for exploratory students

2.       Interpret career assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for individual and class sessions

3.       Create and implement experiential programs such as VolTreks and shadowing

4.       Write learning outcomes and assess the effectiveness of programs

5.       Collaborate with academic advising community to develop industry-specific programs with employers and alumni

6.       Support exploring majors and career courses, orientation, admissions, and first-year experience programs

7.       Develop college/industry resources and maintain center resources including “What Can I Do With This Major?”

8.       Create and facilitate career exploration programs including those that support retention and graduation efforts such as Math Camp, LEAD Summer Institute, and Volunteer Bridge Program

9.       Utilize Handshake and GradesFirst (academic advising) systems to maintain notes and career education statistics

10.   Assist with the execution of center events and programs including career fairs, departmental marketing, community outreach, etc.

 

Required Qualifications:

Education:

Master's degree

 

Experience:

One year of experience working with students in an educational setting

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

·         Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication

·         Skills to develop and implement engaging student programs

·         Ability to maintain confidentiality of student counseling sessions

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or related area

·         Career counseling, coaching, or advising experience

·         Knowledge of B-level psychological assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

·         Knowledge of academic curriculum and academic policies and how majors relate to careers

·         Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and demonstrated sensitivity to multicultural issues
