If you are not familiar with OFA, this is a greenhouse production trade show (very big) with educational sessions directed primarily at growers (hence the name of OFA Short Course). The OFA Short Course runs from July 14 - 17 (Sat - Tues). Keep that in mind as you consider the NC1186 dates Jim outlined below.

Hi all,
Below please find the minutes of our meeting held in conjunction with ASHS. Also, please note that you can use this list serve to email messages to the group. It is set up to reply individually to the sender, rather than "reply all", so if you want a reply to go to the group you need to choose "reply all" or paste [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> into the "To:" line of your email. Archives of messages exist online at
https://LISTSERV.UTK.EDU/cgi-bin/wa?A0=NC1186&X=6191F51587AB633DBE&Y=afulcher%40utk.edu . You'll need to create an account to access the archives - that can be done on this website.
The names of those on this mailing list are pasted below. Please let me know (my contact info is at the very bottom of the email) if you notice missing names and I'll be glad to enter them. I am sure that I am missing some people. Thank you! Amy Fulcher

Meeting of the NC 1186 working group
Sept. 27, 2011
Waikoloa, HI
Next NC 1186 annual meeting– each presentation will be 5 min max + 3 min for Questions. No powerpoints. 1 report per institution.
Send in advance ofmeeting.
2014 Pres. Will have a lot of work to do and should be a tenured faculty member. Meeting suggested in conjunction with ISHS in Brisbane.
Introductions: JimOwen - VPI, Sarah White - Clemson, Amy Fulcher – UT, Matthew Chappell UGA, John Lea-Cox – MD, John M, (MD Postdoc), Lauren Bissey Decagon, Marc van Iersel – UGA, Charlie Hall – Texas A&M, Bill Bauerle-CO, Cheryl Boyer - KSU, Tom Fernandez MSU, Maureen Thiessen – LSU
Update of where we are at since 14 months between meetings:
JLC has been working on website. The server now works and a shell is up. He needs to take information from Sarah and Amy to put it up.
Need one teleconference this fall/winter, already had one.
Next NC 1186 meeting will be in conjunction with OFA’s 2012 Shortcourse in Columbus, OH, July 14-17, 2012. Exact NC 1186 working group tour and meeting dates TBD.
Survey Confusion:
NC 1186 created survey based on Julie’s to be used for baseline data to make this group relevant and use in NIMMS. This is what people have been getting IRB for. It’s long. 45 min to 1.5hr.
SW-SCRI Planning Grant has different mission-unique mission and unique survey.
CH - Firm level demographics should be the same and used to normalize the data across surveys to compare with National Nursery Survey & NASS survey.
Jim-anyone interested in the survey and knows how to phrase questions etc. please get involved.
John M. – Will setup drop box so we can edit the survey –NC 1186.
Use growers to field test survey before deploying.
JO - NC 1186 is broad mission, so a 10,000 ft view from the survey – use to measure change over time on our key issues, sacrifice granularity for this though.
Sarah’s: 25-30 collaborators’ growers will fill out survey.
Sarah has short time frame. Thru IRB by Dec 1011. Will be 20 min to take. Fall 2012 is when NC 1186 would redo IRB process.
Tom Yeager was interested in survey need to touch base with him.
IRB can be redone substantially with modifications not near as much work.
Charlie Hall - Qualtrix accounts are used more than Survey Monkey.
NC 1186 Charlie Hall, Tom Yeager, John M., Julie, Sal were suggested or offered to help with the survey.
Julie’s surveys is a micro view this will be a broad view.
Jim will create synopsis of two surveys and email out.
Amy needs to create listserve.
(The moodle website can be used mass messages to all members but not quite ready yet.)
Someone will send out the USDA website to Lauren-Jim?
Some institutions will allow membership in this project and don’t have to write a Hatch.
Can be institutional representative without research appointment. Everyone gets to vote! USDA and Industry can be members.
Could have industry speaker at OFA meeting.
What are objectives of OFA meeting: revision of survey, revisit the subgroups and what they said they do-need to get more realistic objectives for the group. Need one objective for the working group.
Grant Development Workshop for SCRI grant after OFA.
USDA likes our group's members’ demographics and our interest in pursuing grants together.
Objective for meeting: what do we do beyond containment, now that have the planning grant?
For 2014 – Symposium at ISHS etc. in conjunction with this meeting?
Poster competition for students or social at annual multi-state meeting.
Didn’t set up an irrigation water quality symposium like substrates at SNA, but could.
JLC – impact database for ASHS, if want to contribute impact statements.
Writing web conference will take place.
Need to get in impact statements in November before hearings on the Hill.
Adjourned to MSU seminar.
