As some of you may know, Marilyn and I have been involved in protecting
the rights and dignity of seniors in nursing homes in Knox County.
Earlier this year we were asked by the East Tennessee Human Resources
Agency to work as the first persons in a new volunteer guardianship
program mandated by theState Legislature.
In East Tennessee there has been one paid guardian to serve 65 clients
in 16 counties! After a fairly intensive training program, Marilyn are
now working with 11 clients. The initial effort to recuit volunteers
has centered around Anderson, Blount and Knox Counties.
So far our efforts have resulted in a definite lack of enthusiasm. I'm
hopeful that some of my friends in the Volunteer Chapter may be
reaching people who have the interest and time to get involved in the
program. The volunteers receive good training and are protected from
any liability. They also get mileage. I recognize the fact that all of
you are very busy. I'm just hopeful that you will have opportunities to
"spread the word." Additional information can be obtained from Carol
