Hi. I am a graduate student in the public relations program at the
University of Maryland. There is a problem here on campus: the dean of
the College of Jounrnalism, where PR is housed, wants to eliminate the
undergraduate program here at the university, saying in essence that PR
students need to know only reporting and news editing skills, and denying
an existence of a body of knowledge for public relations.
Can you please help me out? If anyone has received a degree in PR, or
knows the benefits of PR, can you please send an e-mail message to the
provost, the dean, and myself?
Please, for the sake of our profession and field, please write a quick
note in support of keeping the program (which was ranked by a Marquette
University survey and a U.S. News and World Report survey to be the best
undergraduate and graduate program in PR in the country -- which tells you
that things have moved to a very personal and political level).
And, if you know of anyone who could have influence, like chapter
presidents, elected officials, etc. who may support keeping an
undergraduate PR program alive, please notify them. Forward this message
to your friends and colleagues at other universities, fields, firms, etc.
Please.
I appreciate it. Our e-mail addresses are:
[log in to unmask] (Dean Reese Cleghorn), [log in to unmask]
(Provost Gregory Geoffroy), and (Virginia Rodino) [log in to unmask]
Thanks for any time you can spare with this crisis.
Much obliged,
Virginia Rodino
