Shauna: As a college professor with primary teaching areas in public
relations I would recommend the following. First, recognize that public
relations is a management function. Too many people assume that because they
like people that they will be well suited for public relations careers. This
is a very limited view of the field. Second, seek out schools that have an
active professional student chapter either with the Public Relations Society
of America or the International Association of Business Communicators.
Third, look for a degree program that offers courses such as principles of
public relations, writing (journalistic writing and business writing),
research methods, campaign planning and crisis management/problem solving.
Finally, find a school that is in a market large enough to offer a variety of
internship programs in public relations. Experience coupled with skill
development and professional memberships will benefit you greatly. Good
Luck, Dr. Joe Basso>
