If you were able to attend the Intellectual Freedom Committee meeting
during conference on 04/03--thank you!
IF Committee's program about 'verbal judo' aka how to deal with
difficult situations; e.g., an angry book challenge, was declined so we
had a mini version of it anyway during our committee meeting. You can
access our handout here:
https://static.sched.com/hosted_files/tnla24/9c/TNLA.Verbal.Judo.Handout.4.01.2024.pdf
During the meeting, United Against Book Bans was mentioned. United
Against Book Bans is a great resource for dealing with censorship
efforts in your community. IF Committee shared info about United Against
Book Bans when it was first launched but to be honest we probably should
have pushed it more. Today is 'Right to Read Day' and United Against
Book Bans is doing a special initiative. Check it out:
https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/right-to-read-day/.
Everything there is also a great primer for TN Library Legislative
Day--which is tomorrow (04/09). If you can't make it, write your
legislator. Don't know what to say to your legislator? Tell your story.
If you need inspiration, United Against Book Bans site will get you hyped.
Those in public libraries realize the situation is dire. If you feel
your civil rights have been violated on the job, you can report it to
U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division
https://civilrights.justice.gov/report/.
IF Committee needs members and a new Co-chair. If interested, email me
or current Chair Jessica McClure ([log in to unmask]).
Cheers,
Bryan
