Subject: 2023 Babuska Prize Awarded

In December 2023, the Czech Society for Mechanics and the Union of
Czech Mathematicians and Physicists awarded for the thirtieth time the
I. Babuska Prize for the best work in computational mechanics and
computational mathematics submitted by students and young scientists.
The Prize was established in 1994 by an outstanding Czech
mathematician Ivo Babuska (University of Texas at Austin, TX) who
passed away at the age of 97 in Albuquerque, NM, USA on April 12,
2023.

The Prize winner for 2023 is Dr Martin Ladecky from the Faculty of
Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The
work honored is his PhD thesis Advanced spectral methods for
computational homogenization of periodic media.

Further diplomas of honor were delivered to MS theses. The first
position in this category was taken by Lucie Kubickova from the
Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the University of Chemistry and
Technology in Prague. The second was Marek Belda from the Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague and
the third position belongs to Tomas Marhan from the same faculty.

Professor Babuska has established a foundation that will continue
awarding the Prize.

Subject: New Book, Error Norm Estimation in the Conjugate Gradient Algorithm

Error Norm Estimation in the Conjugate Gradient Algorithm
by Gerard Meurant and Petr Tichy

The conjugate gradient (CG) algorithm is almost always the iterative
method of choice for solving linear systems with symmetric positive
definite matrices. This book describes and analyzes techniques based
on Gauss quadrature rules to cheaply compute bounds on norms of the
error. The techniques can be used to derive reliable stopping
criteria. How to compute estimates of the smallest and largest
eigenvalues during CG iterations is also shown. The algorithms are
illustrated by many numerical experiments, and they can be easily
incorporated into existing CG codes.

Date: February 02, 2024
Subject: Special Issue, MMOR, Mixed-Integer Multi-Agent Optimization

You still have one month to submit your papers to the special issue in
MMOR on Mixed-Integer Multi-Agent Optimization.

Many real-world applications require to model the interaction of
multiple self-interested decision makers, whose decisions may depend
on each other. These non-cooperative multi-agent frameworks can either
be modeled as simultaneous or hierarchical games, leading to
(generalized) Nash equilibrium or bilevel problems -- or even
combinations of the two. While classic theory and algorithms for
these classes of problems mainly deal with convex games with
continuous variables, many applications make it necessary to consider
mixed-integer quantities, which are very challenging to tackle both
from a theoretical and a numerical perspective. The aim of this
special issue is to extend and broaden both the theory and algorithms
for multi-agent optimization problems with mixed-integer
variables. Preference will be given to high-quality contributions with
a special emphasis on exact methods.

Of great interest for this special issue are topics around
mixed-integer (generalized) Nash equilibrium models, mixed-integer
bilevel or hierarchical problems, mixed-integer variational
inequalities, or combinations thereof. Contributions proposing methods
for nonconvex programs that encompass as special cases any of these
mixed-integer multi-agent problems are welcome if such a relationship
is explicitly discussed. Subject areas include but are not limited to:
theory of mixed-integer games (simultaneous or hierarchical) such as
existence or uniqueness theory as well as complexity theory;
computational methods for the mentioned problems, preferably exact
methods or approximation methods with quality theory; challenging and
innovative applications.

Any questions can be sent to me!
