Subject: Jean Meinguet, 1930-2023

We are very sorry to report the passing away of Jean Meinguet,
professor of numerical analysis and numerical computer science at the
universite catholique de Louvain (Leuven, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium).
He graduated in engineering (1954), went to Zurich to learn numerical
analysis with H. Rutishauser and E. Stiefel, worked in the "Comit'e
d''etude et d'exploitation des calculateurs 'electroniques (Belgian
Science Foundation, Brussels, Belgium)" on programming a Bell
Telephone co. computer, got a phd on filtering problems, advised by
Vitold Belevitch (1960).

He organized, and taught, numerical analysis, numerical functinal
analsis, numerical algorithmics, numerical linear algebra (with
emphasis on the theory of determinants), algol 60 and other
languages. He published results on an amazing scope of subjects:
rounding error analysis, such as stability of Cholesky factorization,
multivariate spline interpolation, optimal recovery, rational
interpolation (the Cauchy problem), Adamjan-Arov-Krein-Takagi theory,
extremal measures determination. The most often heard, and most
exact, statement on him is: "He knows everything".

Subject: New Book, Bifurcation Analysis of Fluid Flows

Bifurcation Analysis of Fluid Flows by Fred W. Wubs and Henk
A. Dijkstra. Cambridge University Press, August 2023,
ISBN: 9781108495813 Hardback; ISBN: 9781108852791 eBook

Description: A better understanding of the mechanisms leading a fluid
system to exhibit turbulent behavior is one of the grand challenges of
the physical and mathematical sciences. Over the last few decades,
numerical bifurcation methods have been extended and applied to a
number of flow problems to identify critical conditions for fluid
instabilities to occur. This book provides a state-of-the-art account
of these numerical methods, with much attention to modern linear
systems solvers and generalized eigenvalue solvers. These methods also
have a broad applicability in industrial, environmental and
astrophysical flows. The book is a must-have reference for anyone
working in scientific fields where fluid flow instabilities play a
role. Exercises at the end of each chapter and Python code for the
bifurcation analysis of canonical fluid flow problems provide practice
material to get to grips with the methods and concepts presented in
the book.

Contents: 1. Transitions in Fluid Flows. 2. Dynamical systems
background. 3. Well-posed problems. 4. Discretization of PDEs.
5. Numerical bifurcation analysis. 6. Matrix-based techniques.
7. Stationary iterative methods. 8. Non-stationary iterative methods.
9. Matrix free techniques. 10. Benchmark results for canonical
problems.
