Subject: Software: Matrix Equations Package - MEPACK 1.1.0 released

MEPACK is a Fortran software library for solving dense
Sylvester-type matrix equations using optimized variants of the
Bartels-Stewart algorithm. These include optimized level-2
kernels, level-3 block variants, and OpenMP 4 task scheduling
variants. The library provides solvers for (discrete-time)
Sylvester and Lyapunov equations in both their standard and
generalized forms. In addition, the library provides a proper C
interface and wrappers for GNU Octave and MATLAB.

Besides a number of bug fixes, the current release adds support
for Hessenberg matrices and Hessenberg-triangular matrix pairs
as inputs, thus reducing the overhead of the (generalized) Schur
decomposition.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Numerical Analysis, Univ of Montpellier, France

The Institut Montpellierain Alexander Grothendieck of the
University of Montpellier will open a postdoc position in
numerical analysis, starting early 2024 for an initial period of
1 year, with possible renewal for another year. The recruited
postdoc will work on various aspects of polytopal methods (design,
analysis and implementation) for complex problems such as MHD or
flows in porous media.

The applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in
numerical analysis or related field, and have a strong
background on the design, analysis and implementation of
numerical methods (e.g., finite elements or finite volumes).

Subject: Postdoc Position, Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra, Oxford, UK

We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research
Associate to work with Yuji Nakatsukasa at the Mathematical
Institute, University of Oxford. This is a two-year, fixed-term
position, funded by a research grant from the Engineering and
Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The starting date of
this position is flexible with an earliest start date of 01
March 2024. We particularly welcome applications from
individuals who are able to start between 01 March and 01
October 2024.

The successful candidate will be part of a research group funded
by a joint NSF and EPSRC grant to the University of Oxford and
the University of Texas at Austin: "DMS-EPSRC: Certifying
Accuracy of Randomized Algorithms in Numerical Linear
Algebra". The postdoctoral position at the University of
Oxford is funded by EPSRC. The research will involve
collaboration between the postdoctoral research associate,
Professor Yuji Nakatsukasa (University of Oxford), and Professor
Gunnar Martinsson (University of Texas).

The central goal of the research is to develop efficient and
accurate techniques for assessing the errors incurred in any
specific instantiation of a randomized algorithm. Such
techniques will provide a user with a guarantee that even though
the algorithm used is randomized, the output produced is certain
to satisfy whatever level of computational precision was
requested. There is significant flexibility in the exact
research to be conducted, depending on the Research
Associate's strengths and preferences.

We are looking for an enthusiastic student who would like to work at
the interface between applied mathematics, scientific computing and
meteorology. The goal of this NERC funded PhD project is to develop
new algorithms for numerical climate and weather forecasting. More
specifically, we aim to design novel multigrid solvers for advanced
high-order finite element discretisations in atmospheric fluid
dynamics. The project is co-supervised by Dr Jemma Shipton (Exeter)
and Dr Thomas Melvin (UK Met Office). While most prototyping will
be done in the Firedrake framework, an important aspect of the
project is the implementation in the Met Office next generation
model code, with the aim of studying the performance of new
algorithms for real-life setups.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in numerical
mathematics (such as iterative solvers and preconditioners, finite
element methods, discontinuous Galerkin discretisations) and be
enthusiastic about writing high-quality computer code in an
interdisciplinary context.
