discretization research and application development on a wide variety
of platforms, ranging from laptops to exascale supercomputers.
Some of the new additions in version 4.6 are:
- NURBS meshing and discretization improvements.
- SubMesh support for H(curl) and H(div) transfers.

- Stochastic PDE method for Gaussian random fields.
- Obstacle problem and topology optimization examples
- k-d tree for parallel grid function repartitioning.
- HIP support in the PETSc and SUNDIALS interfaces.
- Improved GPU code debugging.
The MFEM library has many more features, including:
- 2D and 3D, arbitrary order H1, H(curl), H(div), L2, NURBS elements.
- Parallel version scalable to hundreds of thousands of MPI cores.
- Conforming/nonconforming adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), including
anisotropic refinement, derefinement and parallel load balancing.
- Galerkin, mixed, isogeometric, discontinuous Galerkin, hybridized,

Version 6.0 of the MORLAB, Model Order Reduction LABoratory, toolbox
has been released. The toolbox is a collection of MATLAB and Octave
routines for model order reduction of dynamical systems. The
implementation is based on spectral projection methods, like the
matrix sign function and the matrix disk function, and on iterative
low-rank solvers for large-scale sparse systems.
New core features are:
- License change to BSD-2-Clause license
- model reduction for large-scale sparse systems including:
* balanced truncation
* positive-real balanced truncation
* linear-quadratic Gaussian balanced truncation
* Krylov subspace methods
* Two-step model reduction, and more ...
- support for MATLAB's new sparss and mechss objects

Subject: New Book, Mathematical Theory of Finite Elements
Mathematical Theory of Finite Elements by Leszek F. Demkowicz
This book discusses the foundations of the mathematical theory of
finite element methods. The focus is on two subjects: the concept of
discrete stability, and the theory of conforming elements forming the
exact sequence. Both coercive and noncoercive problems are discussed..
Following the historical path of development, the author covers the
Ritz and Galerkin methods to Mikhlin's theory, followed by the
Lax-Milgram theorem and Cea's lemma to the Babuska theorem and
Brezzi's theory. He finishes with an introduction to the discontinuous
Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) method with optimal test functions. The book
also includes a unique exposition of the concept of discrete stability
and the means to guarantee it as well as a coherent presentation of
finite elements forming the exact grad-curl-div sequence.

Subject: Core Imaging Library Meeting, UK, Nov 2023
After a successful Core Imaging Library (CIL, https://ccpi.ac.uk/cil/)
user hackathon at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge this March,
we are pleased to announce the first CIL User Meeting, which will take
place at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), in Harwell, UK from
13 to 15 November 2023.
This will be an opportunity for CIL users to meet and share CIL-based
work, experiences, ideas and feature requests with the developer team
and other users working within tomography and other inverse problems.
We aim for this to kick-start an annual user meeting series aimed at
growing a strong community to allow more knowledge sharing and
support.
As part of the event, there will be hands-on training and mini
hackathon/support sessions, the CCPi working group meeting as well as
tours of some of the imaging facilities at RAL. See the full programme
and registration info (travel support available) at
