Subject: New Book, Bayesian Scientific Computing

The once esoteric idea of embedding scientific computing into a
probabilistic framework, mostly along the lines of the Bayesian
paradigm, has recently enjoyed wide popularity and found its way into
numerous applications. This book provides an insider's view of how to
combine two mature fields, scientific computing and Bayesian
inference, into a powerful language leveraging the capabilities of
both components for computational efficiency, high resolution power
and uncertainty quantification ability. The impact of Bayesian
scientific computing has been particularly significant in the area of
computational inverse problems where the data are often scarce or of
low quality, but some characteristics of the unknown solution may be
available a priori. The ability to combine the flexibility of the
Bayesian probabilistic framework with efficient numerical methods has
contributed to the popularity of Bayesian inversion, with the prior
distribution being the counterpart of classical regularization.
However, the interplay between Bayesian inference and numerical
analysis is much richer than providing an alternative way to
regularize inverse problems, as demonstrated by the discussion of time
dependent problems, iterative methods, and sparsity promoting priors
in this book. The quantification of uncertainty in computed solutions
and model predictions is another area where Bayesian scientific
computing plays a critical role. This book demonstrates that Bayesian
inference and scientific computing have much more in common than what
one may expect, and gradually builds a natural interface between these
two areas.

Subject: New Book, Dynamics and Bifurcation in Networks

Dynamics and Bifurcation in Networks: Theory and Applications of
Coupled Differential Equations by Martin Golubitsky and Ian Stewart

In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in
network-based modeling in many branches of science. This book attempts
a synthesis of some of the common features of many such models,
providing a general framework analogous to the modern theory of
nonlinear dynamical systems. How networks lead to behavior not typical
in a general dynamical system and how the architecture of the network
influences this behavior are the book's main themes. It is the first
book to describe the formalism for network dynamics developed over the
past 20 years. The authors introduce a definition of a network and the
associated class of "admissible" ordinary differential equations, in
terms of a directed graph whose nodes represent component dynamical
systems and whose arrows represent couplings between these systems;
develop connections between network architecture and the typical
dynamics and bifurcations of these equations; and discuss applications
of this formalism to various areas of science.

Subject: Biennial Numerical Analysis Conference, UK, Jun 2023

This is a reminder that the 30th of June is the deadline for abstract
submission and early registration at the forthcoming Biennial
Numerical Analysis Conference, to take place in Glasgow during 27-30
June, 2023. More details on the meeting can be found in its web page
https://numericalanalysisconference.org.uk/

In particular, in the section "Information for participants" it is
stated that, unfortunately due to the university's restrictions about
the usage of the rooms, this year we will not be able to host the
conference participants on campus. Since June is usually busy in
Glasgow, we recommend participants book their accommodation as soon as
possible. In the web page there is a link to a list of hotels near the
university campus (on a range of prices). We have also managed to
secure a number of rooms on a special rate in a hotel near the
university as well (the details can be found in the web page).

Finally, to continue with the tradition of having a sense of
community, a breakfast will be available to all participants every
morning at the conference venue, from 8:30 to 9:00.

to a range of inverse problems. This position focuses on further
development of our package CUQIpy https://cuqi-dtu.github.io/CUQIpy
including development of the underlying computational methods.

You will join the developer team and play an integral role in expand-
ing CUQIpy for a wide range of inverse problems and UQ analyses. You
will interact with the CUQI team to ensure that our theory and methods
are put into optimal use. Research directions may include:
- Design, abstraction & implementation of Bayesian methods.
- Approximation methods for high-dimensional complicated posteriors.
- Scalable optimization-based samplers (such as RTO).
- Sampling methods exploiting gradient information.
- Support and training of CUQIpy users.

CUQIpy is developed in a highly collaborative GitHub-centered workflow
with regular programming sessions, code reviews, sprints, and hacka-
thons. We offers rich opportunities to build a profile in scientific
software development and computational UQ for inverse problems.
