6th Spring School on Lattice Boltzmann Methods with OpenLB Software
Lab in Greenwich/London (UK) 2023 -- Register Now

Registration is now open for the Sixth Spring School on Lattice
Boltzmann Methods with OpenLB Software Lab that will be held in
Greenwich/London, UK from 5th to 9th of June 2023. The spring school
introduces scientists and applicants from industry to the theory of
LBM and trains them on practical problems. The first half of the week
is dedicated to the theoretical fundamentals of LBM up to ongoing
research on selected topics. Followed by mentored training on case
studies using OpenLB in the second half, where the participants gain
deep insights into LBM and its applications. This educational concept
offers a comprehensive and personal guided approach to
LBM. Participants also benefit from the knowledge exchange during the
poster session, coffee breaks, and the excursion. We look forward to
your participation.

Keep in mind that the number of participants is limited and that the
registration follows a first come first serve principle.

Subject: Sparse Days at CERFACS, France, Jun 2023

The Annual Sparse Days meeting will be held at CERFACS in Toulouse on
19 and 20 June 2023. The deadline for registration is 25th May 2023
using the web site https://sparsedays.cerfacs.fr/en.

When you register, you should indicate whether you want to give a talk
and whether you want to attend our traditional conference dinner on
the evening of Monday 19th June.

Although an emphasis will be on parallel aspects, any talk that has an
association with sparsity is appropriate. In addition to our core of
numerical linear algebra, talks in optimization, data assimilation,
scientific machine learning, for example are welcome. The maximum
length for the talk and questions is 30 minutes but you are welcome to
request a shorter slot. As usual we will not be having parallel
sessions so talk times may be negotiable.

Subject: Turbulence in Environmental Flows, Italy, Jun 2023

A 2-week course on Turbulence in environmental flows (abstract below)
is organized by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical
Engineering (https://www.dicam.unitn.it/en) of the University of
Trento, Italy, from 5 to 16 June 2023. The participation is open to
MSc and PhD students, young researchers and practitioners. The course
can be attended on-site or online for a total duration of 60 hours
(including hands-on tutorials), corresponding to 6 ECTS. A small fee
(216 Euro) is required and the deadline for the registration is the
31st of March.

The relevant information can be found in the course's website:
https://sites.google.com/unitn.it/turbulence-env-flows

Abstract: Turbulence is one of the last mysteries, not yet fully
understood, in nonlinear fluid mechanics (including multiphase
flows). In this course, we provide an introduction to turbulence by
coupling the analysis of the most used numerical models (e.g.,
k-epsilon model) and the interpretation of real-world measurements,
with a special focus on processes occurring in the atmosphere and in
stratified water bodies such as lakes. The course covers theoretical
and numerical aspects of turbulence modelling and introduces the
necessary statistical tools for the analysis of data from turbulence
observations both in the field and in the laboratory. Theoretical
aspects are supported by numerous hands-on tutorials.

Subject: CEMRACS 2023/SciML, France, Jul-Aug 2023

We are pleased to announce the holding of CEMRACS 2023
(http://smai.emath.fr/cemracs/cemracs23/index.html), from July 17 to
August 25, 2023, at CIRM, in Marseille (France). This year's topic is
Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) or ML for scientific computing. The
goal of CEMRACS is to bring together researchers from academic and
industrial communities to work and exchange around SciML. The first
week (17-21 July) consists in a summer school
(http://smai.emath.fr/cemracs/cemracs23/summer-school.html) followed
by a Hackathon (http://smai.emath.fr/cemracs/cemracs23/projects.html)
for the following five weeks, during which students or researchers can
work on projects proposed by academic or industrial partners.

Registrations for the summer school
(http://smai.emath.fr/cemracs/cemracs23/registration.html) are now
open with a limited number of face-to-face places (participation is
possible virtually - summer school only - starting from a minimum
number of registered participants).

If you are an academic or industrialist interested in proposing and
funding a project for the Hackathon or simply want to attend and give
a talk during the 5 weeks of Hackathon, please contact the organisers
[log in to unmask] PhD students are encouraged to apply to take
part in the Hackathon. A list of funded projects is already available
but will be updated on a regular
basis. (http://smai.emath.fr/cemracs/cemracs23/projects.html) If you
are interested to be kept up to date with the latest news, you can
subscribe now to the CEMRACS 2023 mailing list

Subject: Assistant Professor Position, Scientific Computing, Durham Univ

We are searching for a new colleague in the Department of Computer
Science at Durham University (UK). Durham is a hotspot for
supercomputing in the UK, and it hosts several research groups from
computational sciences. We are searching for someone who could join
our scientific computing research group and contribute methodological
and interdisciplinary work from computer science. The job description
is available at

https://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/CXZ404/assistant-professor-in-computer-science-scientific-computing

Our jobs are available full time and part time to embrace diversity
needs, and they become permanent after a brief probation, i.e. they
are fully tenured. Furthermore, all of our assistant professor jobs
offer a career development pathway to full professor on the long term.

Durham is a very small medieval town in the North East of England with
a good connection to Newcastle Airport, relatively low cost-of-living,
and excellent schools. Please liaise with Tobias Weinzierl
([log in to unmask]) for further questions regarding the
job. Interviews are scheduled for 5/6 June 2023.

Subject: PhD Position, Applied Mathematics, LUT Univ, Finland

The LUT School of Engineering Sciences is offering a fully funded
doctoral student (junior researcher) position.

The position is connected to the Systems and Engineering Science
Doctorate (SEED) programme, which is a European MSCA programme running
from 2023 to 2028. The programme will train 13 highly skilled doctoral
candidates (DC). The candidates will receive strong guidance from two
high-quality supervisors from universities and one expert from an
industry company. The systematic secondment scheme builds on each DC
having an academic secondment in an international university of high
standing and excellence and a non-academic secondment in industry in
Finland.

The focus of this research project is to identify and quantify
uncertainty in the structural parameters of electrical motors by
analyzing vibration signals from an electric motor. This mathematical
problem falls within the field of inverse problems, specifically in
relation to linear elasticity. The project will involve studying
topics such as inverse problems, partial differential equations, and
computational statistics.

The deadline for application is 30 April 2023 at midnight, Finnish
local time (UTC + 3h). Please submit your application together with
the required attachments through the university's online application
system. Applications that are submitted via email will not be
considered. The SEED programme employs a detailed selection
process. The selection process comprises four main stages and will
last approximately 10 weeks. The applicants will be notified of the
selection outcome in July 2023.
