Subject: 2022 Babuska Prize Awarded

In December 2022, the Czech Society for Mechanics and the Union of
Czech Mathematicians and Physicists again awarded the I. Babuska Prize
for the best work in computational mechanics and computational
mathematics submitted by students and young scientists. The Prize
winner for 2022 is Dr Hana Hornikova from the Faculty of Applied
Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. The work honored
is her PhD thesis Preconditioning for linear systems arising from
discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations using isogeometric
analysis.

The second position and a diploma of honor belongs to Dr Jan Rendl
from the same faculty of the University of West Bohemia who presented
his PhD thesis Nonlinear dynamics of rotating systems with journal
bearings. The third position was awarded to Dr Marek Tyburec who was
delivered a diploma of honor for his PhD thesis Modular-topology
optimization of structures and mechanisms defended at the Faculty of
Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Further diplomas of honor were delivered to MS theses. The first
position in this category was taken by Martina Sarmanova from the
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in
Prague. The second position belongs toTomas Hlavaty from the Faculty
of Chemical Engineering of the University of Chemistry and Technology
in Prague and the third was Jan Hruza from the Faculty of Mathematics
and Physics of Charles University in Prague.

The Prize was established in 1994 by an outstanding Czech
mathematician Ivo Babuska (University of Texas at Austin, TX) who
celebrated his 96th birthday this year.

Subject: BibTeX Bibliography

On my web site: https://gerard-meurant.pagesperso-orange.fr/

I posted a BibTeX file containing the references for all my books and
more.

There are references about solving linear systems and eigenvalue
problems, quadrature rules, orthogonal polynomials, history of
numerical linear algebra and much more. Currently, there are 6661
references, but the list will be updated from time to time.

Available are also the Matlab functions that were used for the
numerical experiments in those books and much more. Note that they
come without any warranty or support.

Date: December 27, 2022
Subject: New Book, Intro to the Study of Experimental Probabilities

Introduction a l'Etude des Probabilites Experimentales (in French)
by Bernard Beauzamy

The title "Introduction to the study of experimental probabilities" is
obviously copied from Claude Bernard "Introduction to the study of
experimental medicine", 1865; the objective is the same: to take the
methods out of their academic framework, to show their concrete
application in a real situation. An engineer receives data,
describing the operation of an industrial process: these are generally
Excel files, comprising hundreds of thousands of lines (as many as
observations) and hundreds of parameters (each being associated with
an aspect of the process). He asks himself: what can I do with all
this data? The book provides very concrete answers: it shows how to
construct a histogram for each parameter (essential preliminary work),
makes the distinction between "representation" and "prediction" and
indicates the errors not to be committed. It shows how to exploit the
database, so as to highlight the preponderant parameters.

It does not require any preliminary knowledge of probabilities and is
generally intended for all those who have databases to use:
reliability specialists, doctors, logisticians, quality engineers,
etc., with the exception of course of politicians. and journalists,
who wouldn't buy it anyway.

The price is 50 Euros including tax, which is negligible if you
consider the millions of euros of nonsense it avoids. Please see
http://www.scmsa.eu/livres/SCM_IEPE_order.htm for more information.

[about the author: Bernard Beauzamy, a former student of Laurent
Schwartz, was full professor (University of Lyon, France) from 1979 to
1995. He founded the Societe de Calcul Mathematique SA in 1995, and
has been its CEO ever since.]

Subject: CFP, Differential and Integral Equations, Symmetry Special Issue

Differential and integral equations are widely used to model many
natural phenomena in different scientific fields. The evolution of the
solutions can be well learned by certain high-performance numerical
methods. Well- designed and high-performance numerical methods can
considerably reduce the computational costs of long-term simulations
of real-world problems. They can also perform better in the prediction
of mathematical models. Therefore, it is very important to develop
effective numerical schemes as well as their rigorous numerical
analysis.

In light of the aforementioned regarding the significance of numerical
schemes and analysis, the potential topics for this issue include but
are not limited to the following: The construction of effective
numerical methods for solving differential and integral equations; The
convergence analysis of symmetric numerical schemes; The stability
analysis of symmetric numerical schemes; The dissipativity of
symmetric numerical methods; Iterative algorithms and their
application. Symmetric and structure-preserving numerical methods for
differential and integral equations.

Subject: CFP, Fourier-based Methods, AMSES Special Issue

SpringerOpen's Advanced Modeling and Simulation in Engineering
Sciences (Q1 applied math; modeling and simulation)

Special Issue: Recent advances in Fourier-based computational
approaches for PDEs

The use of Fourier analysis for frequency domain representation or
high- order trigonometric interpolation can be found in a plethora of
applications throughout science and engineering, including those
related to surface representation, scattered data approximation,
signal processing, and differential equations. This special issue aims
to highlight recent contributions on the general development of
Fourier-based approaches toward solving problems in acoustics, solids,
or fluids (including non- standard representations, numerical PDE
methods, and new Fourier neural operators):

The scope can be larger than what has been described, so feel free to
submit any relevant paper. The deadline for submission is May 1st,
2023, with guidelines available in the link above.

Any questions can be directed to the following three guest editors:
