Subject: Call for Nominations, BGCE Student Paper Prize
The 9th BGCE Student Paper Prize will be awarded at the 2023 SIAM CS&E
Conference, February 26 - March 3, for outstanding student work in the
field of Computational Science and Engineering.
Founder of the prize is the Bavarian Graduate School of Computational
Engineering (BGCE, http://www.bgce.de/ ). The prize winner will be
invited to spend one week in Bavaria, Germany, visiting BGCE sites in
Erlangen and Munich. The main objective is to promote excellent
students in CS&E and to foster international exchange at an early
career stage. Eligible for the prize will be undergraduate and
graduate students prior to receiving their PhD (at date of
submission).
Candidates are required to summarize their work in a short 4-page
paper. The prize finalists will be asked to present their work at SIAM
CS&E 2023 at a special "CS&E Student Prize Minisymposium". The papers
and talks will be evaluated by an international prize
committee. Excluded from the competition are only students from our
own universities, FAU and TUM. Deadline for submissions to the BGCE
Student Paper Prize is December 4, 2022. Submissions should be sent in

Nature inspired methods for optimization:
A Julia primer for process engineering
A new book on using Julia to implement and apply nature inspired
methods is now available. Both the web version (http://tiny.cc/nl5yuz)
and all the code are freely available. An ebook (PDF) is also
available for purchase from leanpub.com and a link is given in the web
page.
Short description:
Nature inspired methods for optimization have been available for many
years. They are attractive because of their inspiration and because
they are comparatively easy to implement. This book aims to illustrate
this, using a relatively new language, Julia. Julia is a language
designed for efficiency.
The case studies, from industrial engineering with a focus on process
engineering, have been fully implemented within the book, bar one
example which uses external codes. All the code is available for
readers to try and adapt for their particular applications.
This book does not present state of the art research outcomes. It is
primarily intended to demonstrate that simple optimization methods are
able to solve complex problems in engineering. As such, the intended
audience will include students at the Masters or Doctoral level in a
wide range of research areas, not just engineering, and researchers or
industrial practitioners wishing to learn more about Julia and nature
inspired methods.

We would like to draw your attention to the Workshop POEMS22 that will
take place at the Politecnico di Milano on December 12th-14th, 2022.
The development and analysis of numerical methods for the
approximation of the solution to Partial Differential Equations (PDEs)
on polygonal and polyhedral meshes have undergone explosive interest
in recent years among the scientific community. Indeed, polygonal and
polyhedral meshes offer a very flexible framework to handle, for
instance, hanging nodes, different cell shapes within the same mesh,
and non-matching interfaces, resulting thus in improved geometric
flexibility to correctly represent complicated geometries, interfaces,
and heterogeneous media.
This workshop aims to bring together experts in this field to discuss
the most recent developments and establish common grounds and shared

Tufts University has an opening for a post-doctoral researcher to
engage in a cross-cutting project focusing on the development of and
use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for social sciences
applications. Recent advances, starting with the now classical
word2vec approach to models built using attention and transformer
networks such as BERT and GTP3 have shown tremendous potential for
natural language modeling and automated interpretation. While most
applications currently focus on content generation, user interfaces
(chatbots), and understanding news content, this project aims to use
NLP as a major assistive technology to gain insights into student work
and understanding in STEM education systems. This presents novel
challenges, to interpret, for example, whether a student is arguing
from intuition or from formal principles, whether they are excited or
intimidated, whether they are uncertain or confident. The data may be
written work or audio-video streams of conversations, and analysis of
the latter may involve video processing of gestures and tone of
voice. This multi-modal analysis is the next frontier in NLP and will
require novel advances in both statistical machine learning and deep
learning architectures. This position provides a unique opportunity to
develop and collaborate with exclusive data sets, in research designed
to influence classroom teaching and impact.
Applicants must have a PhD in electrical engineering, computer
science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a similar field; a
background of research in the learning sciences would be helpful but
is not required The ideal candidates will have experience with and a
publication record in one or more of the following areas: modern
methods of statistical signal processing, machine learning,
optimization, or data science with applications to NLP. Programming
experience in Matlab or python is highly desired and preferred.
The post-doc will be jointly supervised by a team of faculty in

The design and certification of new aircraft currently relies on a
significant period of flight testing. There is a need to reduce the
risks, flight time and costs of flight testing whilst using the
advances in simulation to substitute in part for flight testing. The
focus of the PhD is to reduce the reliance on flight data through
increased reliability of simulation data by developing new approaches
for data fusion and modelling, e.g. using state of the art CFD
software; combining multi-fidelity data; and applying semi-empirical

Simulation (INS) at the University of Bonn, Germany. The envisioned
research aims at developing new, scalable parallel algorithms for
adaptive mesh refinement using various shape primitives, such as
cubes, tetrahedra, prisms, and pyramids. These algorithms shall be
prototyped, demonstrated, and released as part of the p4est and t8code
software libraries. This particular project is collaborative with the
German Aerospace Center (DLR) with applications to atmosphere
simulations and numerical weather studies.
A successful candidate would present a Master's degree in Mathematics,
Computer Science, or a closely related field. They should be familiar
with the basic theories on the numerical solution of partial
differential equations, skilled in the collaborative development of
open source scientific software, and ideally experienced in parallel
programming and computing.
The INS is part of Bonn Mathematics and covers research and teaching
of scientific computing, numerical simulation, and numerical analysis.
