Subject: Jonathan Barzilai

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Prof. Jonathan Barzilai, in March 2022, after a battle with cancer.
Dr. Barzilai was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. He received his doctoral
degree in applied mathematics from the Israel Institute of Technology
(Technion) in Haifa, Israel. Along with Jonathan Borwein, he
developed the famous Barzilai- Borwein gradient method, widely
recognized as a very significant contribution to nonlinear
optimization. His passion for optimization research continued to his
very last days, and throughout that time he made significant
breakthroughs in algorithms with implications for such applications as
AI training. His other passion was the related areas of measurement
theory and decision theory and analysis. Dr. Barzilai published major
papers on measurement and decision theory and developed a methodology,
Preference Function Modelling (PFM), for measurement, evaluation, and
decision making by a single decision maker or a group, based on more
than twenty years of research into the mathematical foundations of the
Analytic Hierarchy Process, utility theory, decision theory,
measurement theory, and related fields. He challenged existing
theories in these domains and very recently completed a book entitled
Pure Economics (published posthumously) in which he points out the
major flaws in these disciplines and offers corrections. The link to
Jonathan's book is: https://scientificmetrics.com/pure-economics.html.

Dr. Barzilai held high ethical and intellectual standards, both for
himself and others. He challenged convention and was ready to be
unpopular in defense of his convictions. He was a teacher, guide, and
mentor with a great sense of humor, offering invaluable advice and
insights to those who were fortunate to know him. He leaves behind his
loving wife Rachel, son Dan (Limor) and grandson Erez, along with
members of his extended family.

The Dalhousie University memorial page for Jonathan is at:

Subject: Owe Axelsson

With a great sadness, we want to inform you that on June 2 2022 our
teacher, mentor and colleague Owe Axelsson passed away. He was known
for his pioneering work on preconditioning methods and overall
contributions in numerical methods and numerical linear algebra in
particular. He was the founder of the journal 'Numerical Linear
Algebra with Applications' and served as editor-in-chief for more than
20 years. Also, he was instrumental in bringing together scientists
from Eastern Europe to join the international scientific community
through visits, internships, postdoc fellowships and joint European
commission projects. He was strategic thinker, very good organizer,
hard worker but also kind, supportive and friendly with colleagues,
students and coworkers
(https://user.it.uu.se/~maya/OAxelsson_public_html/index.html). With
his life Owe left us an example of honesty, ethics, recognition,
kindness, help and care!

We are organizing a memorial web page at
https://www.remembr.com/owe.axelsson.mem, where those who remember him
can share their thoughts and memories.

2022 MaRDI Workshop on Scientific Computing
Dates: Oct. 26-28, 2022
Location: Munster, Germany
Format: In-person meeting
Website: https://workshop.mardi.ovh

With an ever growing body of scientific knowledge and an explosion of
data generated by computer-assisted and computer-based experiments,
the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability of
research data (FAIR principles,
https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles ) became key factors for
further scientific progress. Specifically in Scientific Computing,
beyond the actual simulation data, the developed numerical algorithms,
their implementations, their procedural data, and their metadata
descriptions are central research data sets. Establishing FAIR
principles for these data is the aim of the task area 'Scientific
Computing' within the German Mathematical Research Data Initiative
MaRDI ( https://www.mardi4nfdi.de ), which is a consortium in the
Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur NFDI ( https://www.nfdi.de ).

With this first "MaRDI Workshop on Scientific Computing", we want to
bring together researchers from the Scientific Computing community and
related disciplines who are interested in the FAIRness of their
research data. In additions to presentations on current MaRDI projects
and selected keynote talks, birds-of-a-feather sessions will leave
room for discussions and hands-on tutorials. Furthermore, we invite
participants to contribute talks related to the following topics:
Knowledge graphs and ontologies; Software Interfaces; Benchmarks;
Formal workflow descriptions; Software distribution and archival;
Reproduction of numerical experiments; Research data management.

The deadline for abstract submission is 2022-07-31.
