Subject: Roland Glowinski (1937-2022)

It is with great sadness that we report that Roland Glowinski, the
Cullen Professor of Mathematics at the University of Houston, passed
away on January 26. Glowinski's scientific training began at the Ecole
Polytechnique. In 1963, he received a master's degree in electrical
engineering from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications. He
completed a doctorate in mathematics in 1970 from the University
Pierre and Marie Curie, where he was supervised by Jacques-Louis
Lions. His scientific activity was mostly dedicated to the variational
approach for the solution of problems modeled by partial differential
equations and inequalities, most of these problems being related to
applications from mechanics, physics, engineering sciences, and life
sciences. Glowinski coupled relentless curiosity, patience, and
willingness to listen with a natural ability to collaborate with
people across a wide spectrum of scientific and engineering
disciplines. This gift helped him amass an impressive international
network of colleagues and friends. During his career, he authored 10
books and more than 450 scientific articles and served on several
editorial boards. He enjoyed his role as advisor to numerous students
and postdoctoral fellows, taking pleasure in watching the development
of their careers.

Over the course of his career, Professor Glowinski was recognized at
every level, university, national, and international. He was both a
SIAM Fellow and an AMS Fellow. In each case, he was in the inaugural
class of fellows. He was associated with several international
organizations, including the Academia Europea, the French National
Academy of Sciences, and the French National Academy of Technology. He
was a Knight of the French Order of the Legion d'Honneur and an
Officer of the French Order of the Academic Palms and French Order of
National Merit. Most recently, Glowinski received the SIAM 2020
W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize. The award recognized his work in
differential equations and control theory. Receiving the award was
special to him as his mentor Lions received the Reid Prize in 1998.

We are pleased to announce the first edition of the FRAME conference,
FRAME 2020+2 - Fractured media: numerical methods for fluid flow and
mechanics, to be held on May 17-20, 2022 at Politecnico di Torino,
Italy (initially planned on 2020, postponed due to the pandemic).

The conference is aimed at presenting and discussing cutting-edge
issues about modeling and development of numerical tools for porous
fractured media simulations. Areas of interest include, but are not
limited to: Flow in fracture networks; Influence of roughness inside
the fractures; Flow in fractured porous media; Up-scaling and
homogeneization; Coupled thermal, hydraulic and/or mechanical
processes in fractured media; Fault reactivation and fracture
deformation; Fracture propagation; Self organization of fracture
networks; Non-linearities (such as geochemistry, dissolution inside
the fractures etc&); Verification benchmarks; Uncertainty
quantification/risk measurements; Artificial intelligence applied to
fractured media, Graph based methods, model reduction.

Abstract submission is now open. Abstracts are welcome for oral
presentation. Abstract submission will close on February 20th. We hope
that the state of the pandemic will allow for an in presence
conference, but we will accommodate remote presentations, if needed.

There is no conference fee, but registration will be compulsory.

Date: January 26, 2022
Subject: Postdoc Position, Boston Univ

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the research
group of Prof. Samuel Isaacson in the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at Boston University. This position is to develop
stochastic reaction-drift-diffusion methods for studying T cell
signaling dynamics in realistic cellular geometries. The project
involves both the development of new particle-based methods for
simulating spatial transport and reactions within cells, and the
development of mathematical models for T cell signaling in
collaboration with experimentalists. Applicants interested in either
biological modeling or scientific computing are invited to apply.

Applicants should have a background in mathematical biology,
biophysics, scientific computing, computational physics, numerical
analysis or related areas. As many planned simulations require solving
computationally expensive PDE and particle models, expertise in a
compiled language is required (C, C++, Fortran or Julia). No previous
experience in T cell modeling is required.

Applications should be submitted through Mathjobs at
https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/19424
and include a CV, a research statement, and three letters of
reference. The start date is flexible. Review of applications will be
ongoing until the position is filled. For more information about this
position please contact Prof. Isaacson at [log in to unmask]

applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to
race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity,
national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any
other characteristic protected by law. We are a VEVRAA Federal
