Subject: Scotch v7.0

We announce the release, as libre/free software, of version 7.0
(codename "Sankara") of the SCOTCH + PT-SCOTCH software package. THIS
IS A MAJOR RELEASE, fruition of six years of development, which brings
many innovative features.

Thread management is now fully dynamic. Efficient multi-threaded
versions of many time-consuming algorithms have been coded. These
algorithms concern the SCOTCH (formerly) sequential library, as well
as the PT-SCOTCH MPI-based library (which now provides hybrid parallel
algorithms, mixing threads and MPI). New objects called "contexts"
allow users to launch SCOTCH tasks concurrently. More here :
https://www.labri.fr/perso/pelegrin/scotch/

IMPORTANT: YOUR HELP IS NEEDED: in 2022, the SCOTCH project will turn
30. In order to perpetuate software development around SCOTCH, a
consortium is being created, to pool development goals and investments
from its members so as to fund engineering staff to carry out
strategic R&D.

We are currently identifying ambitious key parties interested in
joining the consortium. This is a great opportunity for people and
organizations having needs in fast and efficient graph partitioning to
support and ensure the sustainability of the Scotch software for its
users all around the world.

Would Scotch (prospective) users be so kind as to fill the
questionnaire below?
https://framaforms.org/feedback-on-the-scotch-software-1640960422

The preparatory document for the Scotch consortium is available here:
https://framaforms.org/sites/default/files/forms/files/scotch_consortium_preparation_20211231.pdf

Subject: New Books, Mathematical Elasticity, Volumes I-III

Mathematical Elasticity, Volumes I-III
by Philippe G. Ciarlet

The Mathematical Elasticity set contains three self-contained volumes
that together provide the only modern treatise on elasticity. They
introduce contemporary research on three-dimensional elasticity, the
theory of plates, and the theory of shells. Each volume contains
proofs, detailed surveys of all mathematical prerequisites, and many
problems for teaching and self-study. An extended preface and
extensive bibliography have been added to each volume to highlight the
progress that has been made since the original publication. The first
book, Three-Dimensional Elasticity, covers the modeling and
mathematical analysis of nonlinear three-dimensional elasticity. In
volume two, Theory of Plates, asymptotic methods provide a rigorous
mathematical justification of the classical two-dimensional linear
plate and shallow shell theories. The objective of Theory of Shells,
the final volume, is to show how asymptotic methods provide a rigorous
mathematical justification of the classical two-dimensional linear
shell theories: membrane, generalized membrane, and flexural. These
classic textbooks are for advanced undergraduates, first-year graduate
students, and researchers in pure or applied mathematics or continuum
mechanics. They are appropriate for courses in mathematical
elasticity, theory of plates and shells, continuum mechanics,
computational mechanics, and applied mathematics in general.

Subject: SIAM International Meshing Roundtable, ONLINE, Feb 2022

The organizing committee of the 2022 SIAM International Meshing
Roundtable has decided that this year, the SIAM IMR will now run as a
free, online only, event. (This is in contrast with it being offered
as a hybrid event as was originally announced.)

The decision was based on several factors including the onset of the
Omicron variant of COVID-19 which makes travel in February an unknown.

The online event will run February 23-26, 2022, as originally planned.

For more details, please see the conference website:
https://internationalmeshingroundtable.com/ .

Updated Research Abstract, Research Notes and Poster Session:
Moving online allows greater flexibility with deadlines for Research
Abstracts (single-paragraph abstract), Research Notes (short-form 4
page papers) and Poster Session entries. These have been updated to
January 14, 2022. Submissions to all three will be accepted up until
this date, even if a notification of commitment has not been received.
Please see https://www.internationalmeshingroundtable.com/research-
notes/ and https://www.internationalmeshingroundtable.com/poster/

Meshing Contest Deadline:
The details of the meshing contest are online, at
https://www.internationalmeshingroundtable.com/meshing-contest/. The
deadline for submission is February 4, 2022.

Subject: Summer School, Electronic Structure with DFTK, France, Aug 2022

From 29 to 31 Aug 2022 we organize an interdisciplinary summer school
centred around electronic-structure simulations and methodological
developments in density-functional theory (DFT) at Sorbonne University
in Paris, France.

With this school we want to bridge the divide between simulation
practice and fundamental research in electronic-structure methods. It
is intended for both researchers with a background in mathematics or
computer science willing to be introduced to the numerical aspects of
electronic-structure calculations, as well as physicists or chemists
interested in modern software development methodologies and the
mathematical background of DFT.

As part of the school we will discuss the methodology underpinning
modern DFT approaches and there is ample time to conduct numerical
experiments and simulation exercises in hands-on sessions. For the
latter we will introduce participants to the Julia programming
language as well as to DFTK, an accessible (less than 7000 lines) DFT
code equipped with state-of-the-art performance to treat systems with
1000 electrons.

See the school's website https://school2022.dftk.org/ for more details
and https://school2022.dftk.org/registration to register. Note that
the school is free of charge and there is limited funding to
contribute towards local expenses of junior researchers.
