We invite applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position with
Lehigh University's new Program in the Foundations and Applications of
Mathematical Optimization and Data Science (Lehigh MODS).
Applications are welcome immediately. Review of applications will
begin on February 1, 2022, and will continue until the position is
filled. The Lehigh MODS program has been established with the
perspective that mathematical optimization is an essential tool
throughout the revolutionary field of data science. The aim of the
program is to capitalize on Lehigh's world-class reputation in
mathematical optimization research toward advances in these and
related fields. The incoming postdoctoral fellow will be joining an
interdisciplinary team of researchers working on a range of topics
from optimization theory and algorithms to the application of modern
data science and machine learning tools in areas from energy and
healthcare systems to quantum chemistry. The Lehigh MODS team is
composed of faculty members in Lehigh's departments of Industrial and
Systems Engineering (ISE), Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
(ChBE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Economics (Econ), and
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE): Frank E. Curtis (ISE), Aida
Khajavirad (ISE), Alberto J. Lamadrid (Econ), Theodore K. Ralphs
(ISE), Srinivas Rangarajan (ChBE), Daniel P. Robinson (ISE), Karmel
S. Shehadeh (ISE), Lawrence V. Snyder (ISE), Parv Venkitasubramaniam
(ECE), Luis Nunes Vicente (ISE), and Sihong Xie (CSE). All Lehigh
MODS team members are also members of Lehigh's Institute for Data,
Intelligent Systems, and Computation (I-DISC), which provides
administrative support for the program. A successful candidate will
have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree by Summer 2022. In addition to
joining collaborative interdisciplinary projects, the incoming
postdoctoral fellow will be expected to contribute modestly to the
program, such as aiding in the organization of seminars and workshops.

The fellowship position would start at a mutually agreed-upon date.
The term of the position is negotiable and could be 1 or 2 years. A
formal application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research
statement (at most 4 pages), and list of at least 3 references.
Applications should be sent by email to [log in to unmask]
Informal inquiries in advance of a formal application are welcome.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Optimization, Umea Univ

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Umea
University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in high-dimensional
stochastic optimization with application to prehospital care. The
fellowship is for two years with a starting date of February 21, 2022,
or by agreement. Optimization plays a key role in data-driven
decision-making, where problems are often high-dimensional and of
black-box nature. The focus of this project is to develop new theory
and algorithms for the area, with a suggested emphasis on a new family
of stochastic derivative-free algorithms that search for
low-dimensional structure in a black-box problem.

As an application of this theory, the appointed candidate will have
the opportunity to interact with a multidisciplinary research team
focused on optimizing prehospital care in Sweden. A digital twin of
the problem has already been developed which, through large-scale
simulations, allows us to numerically assess various resource
allocations (location and scheduling of ambulances). The objective is
to find the optimal resource allocation, subject to economical and
practical constraints.

This postdoctoral fellowship is financed by The Kempe Foundations and
amounts to 312 000 SEK per year.

Umea offers excellent working and living conditions. The city is young
and located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests
and lakes and lies close to the sea. In the vicinity, there are plenty
of opportunities for both indoor and outdoor activities.

Subject: PhD Position, Bioinformatics/Comp Biology, Univ of Memphis

Experimental biologists are generating data at an unprecedented rate.
Unfortunately, biological insight has not kept pace with this deluge
of data. The goal of my lab is to improve the inference of biological
meaning from the wealth of experimental data collected from single
cells to whole organisms. To do so, we develop sophisticated
statistical and computational tools that enable integrated analyses of
noisy, heterogeneous datasets. More information on the lab can be
found at http://daiglelab.org.

Assistantships are available for students interested in pursuing Ph.D.
research in bioinformatics and/or computational systems
biology. Active research areas in the lab include computational
identification of disease biomarkers from high-throughput omics data
and machine learning- based inference of gene regulatory networks
(GRNs) from single-cell data. We currently have openings in two
projects from these areas: (1) biomarker discovery for post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) from clinical and molecular data collected from
military populations, and (2) application of deep learning techniques
to rapidly and accurately infer GRNs from single- cell RNA-sequencing
data.

The successful candidate should be highly motivated and have some R
and/or Python programming experience. Prior research experience in
bioinformatics and/or computational biology is desirable. Details
about admission and degree requirements can be found at
http://www.memphis.edu/biology/graduate (Ph.D., Biological
Sciences). To ensure full consideration, applications should be
completed by February 1. Accepted students will be supported through
a graduate assistantship. If interested, please first email
Dr. Daigle ([log in to unmask]) your CV and a concise statement
describing your interest in the position, previous research
experience, and relevant coursework.
